Timing Chain Cover, Chain, Sprockets, & Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Power steering gear
     
    Starter motor
     
    Right transmission cover and bolt
     

  8.  
  9. Install a flywheel holding tool.
  10.  
  11. Matchmark the position of the crankshaft balancer.
  12.  
  13. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  14.  
  15. Using a suitable tool, remove the crankshaft balancer, see Crankshaft Balancer.

  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Water pump
     
    Front cover and gasket
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil pump

  19. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks are aligned. The marks should face each other. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts.
    NOTE
    Do not turn the crankshaft after the timing chain has been removed. Damage to the pistons or valves may occur.

  21. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Camshaft sprocket and timing chain.
     
    Crankshaft sprocket using a suitable puller.

To install:

  1. Be sure the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket is at the 12 O-clock position. If not rotate the crankshaft to the correct position.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
  4.  
  5. Crankshaft sprocket with a Crankshaft Balancer and Sprocket Installer tool.
  6.  
  7. Timing chain on the camshaft sprocket.
  8.  
  9. Timing chain and sprocket assembly so the timing marks are aligned and torque the camshaft sprocket bolts as follows:

    All except 2007 6.0L engine and 2008 6.2L engine, tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
     
    2007 6.0L engine and 2008 6.2L engines, tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt a first pass to 55ft. lbs. (75 Nm), then tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt a final pass an additional 50 degrees

  11. Install the oil pump and torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the oil pan with a new gasket.
  14.  
  15. Install the front cover with a new gasket and seal and hand-tighten the bolts at this time.
  16.  
  17. Install the oil pan to cover bolts and hand-tighten them at this time. Install Front Cover alignment plate J-41480 and Front Cover Alignment Tool J-41476 to ensure front cover is properly aligned. Torque the oil pan-to-front cover bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) then the remaining bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  19. Remove the alignment tools.
  20.  
  21. Install the water pump.
  22.  
  23. Position the balancer on the end of the crankshaft, using the matchmarks as a reference.
  24.  
  25. Install the crankshaft balancer, refer to Crankshaft Balancer section.
  26.  
  27. Remove the flywheel holding tool.
  28.  
  29. Install or connect the following:

    Starter motor
     
    Power steering gear
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  30.  
  31. Fill the cooling system to the correct level.
  32.  
  33. Fill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  34.  
  35. Start the engine and check for leaks.
