Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tires and wheels.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.

  7. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
    CAUTION
    The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.

  9. Remove the stabilizer shaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the power steering pressure and return hoses from the power steering gear.
  12.  
  13. Remove the power steering line hold-downs from the crossmember.
  14.  
  15. Remove the brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) bracket.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 2 front crossmember mounting nuts.
  18.  
  19. Using hand tools only, LOOSEN, Do Not Remove, the 2 rear crossmember mounting nuts.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the height sensor arm to the control arm.
  22.  
  23. Use a utility stand to support the front of the crossmember.
  24.  
  25. Compress the spring, it will allow the crossmember to lower enough to properly remove the gear.
  26.  
  27. Remove the lower shock mounting bolts.
  28.  
  29. Remove the brake pipe bracket for the left front brake caliper from the crossmember.
  30.  
  31. Remove the plastic brake pipe hold-down for the right front brake pipe.
  32.  
  33. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts and nuts.
  34.  
  35. Maneuver the power steering gear around the brake lines from the vehicle through the left wheelhouse opening.

To install:


NOTE
For Z06 applications, replace the crossmember-to-steering gear insulators.

  1. Install the power steering gear into the vehicle through the left wheelhouse opening.
  2.  
  3. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts and nuts.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the nuts to 74 ft. lbs.(100 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the lower shock mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Raise the crossmember by the utility stand and remove spring compressor.
  10.  
  11. Install all of the crossmember mounting nuts.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the nuts, using hand tools only, to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the brake pipe bracket for the left front brake caliper to the crossmember.
  16.  
  17. Install the plastic brake pipe hold-down for the right front brake pipe.
  18.  
  19. Install the brake BPMV bracket.
  20.  
  21. Install the power steering pressure hose to the power steering gear.
  22.  
  23. Tighten the fittings to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the power steering return hose to the power steering gear.
  26.  
  27. Tighten the fittings to 29 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the power steering hold-downs to the crossmember.
  30.  
  31. Install the stabilizer shaft to the crossmember.
    CAUTION
    The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.

  33. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
    1. Tighten the lower coupling retaining bolt to 25ft. lbs. (34 Nm).

    3. Tighten the upper coupling bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).

  35. Connect the height sensor arm to the control arm.
  36.  
  37. Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
  38.  
  39. Install the tires and wheels.
  40.  
  41. Lower the vehicle.
  42.  
  43. Bleed the power steering system.
  44.  
  45. Check and adjust the front end alignment.
