Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Center exhaust heat shield
     
    Transmission support bracket
     
    Transmission mount and crossmember. Support the transmission with a jack.
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Front engine undercover
     
    Transmission ground bolt
     
    Shift rod
     
    Transmission oil cooler fittings
     
    Torque converter access cover
     
    Torque converter bolts
     
    Oxygen sensor connectors
     
    Heat shield
     
    Controller harness connector

  7. Support the transmission with a jack under the transmission oil pan rail.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect:

    Starter
     
    Engine to transmission retaining bolts
     
    Transmission
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Ensure the torque converter is fully seated in the transmission.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission. Torque the mounting bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
     
    Torque converter. Torque the mounting bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Torque converter access cover
     
    Starter. Torque the mounting bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
     
    Controller harness connector
     
    Heat shield. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Oxygen sensor connector
     
    Transmission cooler fittings. Torque the mounting bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
     
    Shift rod
     
    Driveshaft. Torque the mounting bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
     
    Transmission support bracket. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Transmission mount and crossmember. Torque the mounting bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
     
    Center heat shield
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the transmission to the correct level.
  6.  
  7. Start engine and check for proper transmission operation.
