Flywheel or Flexplate & Ring Gear

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission
     
    Starter
     

  6.  
  7. Using Special Tool 9102 or a suitable flywheel locking tool, lock the flywheel by inserting the tool in the starter opening.
  8.  
  9. Continue removing:

    Clutch if equipped
     
    Flywheel bolts and discard
     
    Spacer and the flywheel/flexplate
     

  10.  
  11. Inspect the rear crankshaft oil seal for leakage and replace if required.

To install:


NOTE
New flywheel/flexplate bolts must be used.

  1. Position the flywheel/flexplate and align on the crankshaft pin.
  2.  
  3. Install the spacer and new flywheel/flexplate bolts and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) in a crisscross pattern.
    1. Rotate the flywheel/flexplate bolts an additional 90° clockwise.
    2.  

  4.  
  5. Install the clutch if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Remove Special Tool 9102 or flywheel locking tool.
  8.  
  9. Install the starter.
  10.  
  11. Install the transmission.
  12.
