Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Center exhaust heat shield
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Transmission support bracket
     
    Transmission mount and crossmember. Support the transmission with a jack stand.
     
    Reverse light switch connector
     
    Clutch slave cylinder pressure line
     
    Reverse lockout cable
     
    Shift rod
     
    Ground cable
     
    Transmission

To install:

  1. Raise the transmission into place.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Ground cable. Tighten the bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Transmission to engine block retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Transmission mount bolts to the transmission. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     
    Rear crossmember retaining bolts. Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Shift rod
     
    Reverse lockout cable
     
    Reverse light connector
     
    Clutch slave cylinder pressure line
     
    Driveshaft. Torque the mounting bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
     
    Center exhaust heat shield
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill transmission to the correct level.
  6.  
  7. Check for proper clutch operation.
  8.
