Wheel Bearings

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Disc brake calipers and bolts
     
    Rear disc brake rotor
     
    Parking brake shoes
     
    Rear axle halfshaft nut
     
    Rear axle halfshaft
     
    Snap ring from the rear hub assembly housing

  9. Use Special Tool 9181 or a suitable bearing tool to remove the bearing on the hub.
    WARNING
    Be sure not to mar or damage the rear axle halfshaft flange while in vise.

  11. Remove the inner bearing race from the rear axle halfshaft flange by screwing the clamping pliers onto the puller then tighten.
  12.  
  13. Clamp the rear axle halfshaft flange in vise.
    1. Fit the thrust piece with the large diameter on the rear axle halfshaft flange.
    2.  
    3. Place the complete puller over the inner bearing race.
    4.  
    5. Clamp it firmly at the upper grooves of the clamping pliers over the tapered sleeve of the puller.
    6.  
    7. Pull the inner bearing race off the rear axle halfshaft flange using the puller.
    8.

  15. Check the lateral and radial runout of the rear axle halfshaft flange. Replace rear axle halfshaft flange if test values are exceeded.
    1. Permissible lateral runout: 0.0011 in. (0.03mm).
    2.  
    3. Permissible radial runout: 0.0011 in. (0.03mm).

To install:

  1. Use Special Tool 9199 or a suitable bearing tool to install the bearing by pulling it into the wheel carrier until it touches the shoulder of the wheel carrier.
    NOTE
    Insure that the snap ring is correctly fitted in the rear wheel carrier.

  2.  
  3. Install the snap ring into the rear wheel carrier.
    1. Verify the pressure plate lies flush against the bearings inner race during insertion.
    2.  

  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Rear axle halfshaft flange
     
    Parking brake shoes
     
    Disc brake rotor
     
    Rear disc brake caliper bolts
     
    Rear halfshaft
     
    Wheel and tire assembly
