Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  6.  
  7. Remove the radiator fan with the radiator.
  8.  
  9. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the starter.
  12.  
  13. Lock the flywheel using Special Tool 9102 or a suitable flywheel locking tool to lock the flywheel into the starter opening.
  14.  
  15. Remove the vibration damper bolt and the vibration damper from the crankshaft.

To install:

  1. Inspect for oil leaks at the front crankshaft oil seal and replace if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the sealing surface of the vibration damper and clean up with emery paper if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Measure the vibration damper bolt and replace if the length-under-head exceeds 3.071 inches (78 mm).
  6.  
  7. Position the vibration damper on the front of the crankshaft.
  8.  
  9. Lubricate the bolt threads with engine oil and torque to 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)
  10.  
  11. Turn the bolt an additional 90° clockwise.
  12.  
  13. Install the accessory drive belt, radiator and fan.
  14.  
  15. Remove the flywheel locking tool.
  16.  
  17. Install the starter.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  
  21. Start the engine and check for leaks.
