Diagnosis



Before removing any unit from the starting system for repair or diagnosis, perform the following inspections:



Visually inspect the battery for indications of physical damage and loose or corroded cable connections.
 
Determine the state of charge and cranking capacity of the battery. Charge or replace the battery if necessary
 
Visually inspect the ignition switch for indications of physical damage and loose or corroded wire harness connections
 
Visually inspect the starter motor for indications of physical damage and loose or corroded wire harness connections
 
Visually inspect the starter solenoid for indications of physical damage and loose or corroded wire harness connections
 
Visually inspect the wire harnesses for damage and repair or replace any faulty wiring as required
 

  1. Starter Fails to Operate:
    1. Battery discharged or faulty.
    2.  
    3. Starter circuit wiring faulty.
    4.  
    5. Ignition switch faulty.
    6.  
    7. Park/Neutral position switch faulty or misadjusted.
    8.  
    9. Starter solenoid faulty.
    10.  
    11. Starter motor faulty.
    12.

  3. Starter Engages, Fails to Turn Engine:
    1. Battery discharged or faulty.
    2.  
    3. Starter circuit wiring faulty.
    4.  
    5. Starter motor faulty.
    6.  
    7. Engine seized.
    8.

  5. Starter Engages, Spins Out Before Engine Starts:
    1. Starter ring gear faulty.
    2.  
    3. Starter motor faulty.
    4.

  7. Starter Does Not Disengage:
    1. Starter motor improperly installed.
    2.  
    3. Ignition switch faulty.
    4.  
    5. Starter motor faulty.
    6.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower engine panel
     
    Right O2 sensor electrical connector
     
    Right side exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold to the rear exhaust system
     
    Starter bolts (1) and reposition the starter to access the starter electrical cables
     
    Starter positive cable protective plastic cap (3)
     
    Starter cables by removing the ground cable nut (2) and the positive cable nut
     
    Starter (4) from the vehicle

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Starter (4)
     
    Starter cable and torque the nut to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm)
     
    Ground cable and torque the nut to 52 inch lbs. (6 Nm)
     
    Starter positive cable protective plastic cap (3)
     
    Starter bolts and torque to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm)
     
    Right side exhaust pipe
     
    Right side O2 sensor
     
    Lower engine panel

  3. Lower the vehicle and connect the negative battery cable.
