Drag Link



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Steering damper from the drag link
     
    Nuts attaching the drag link to the pitman arm and the idler arm
     
    Nuts attaching the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles
     

  8.  
  9. Using Special Tool C-3894-A or a suitable two-jaw puller, remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
  10.  
  11. Using Special Tool 9168 or a suitable ball joint puller, remove the drag link from the pitman arm and the idler arm.
    NOTE
    The right-hand drag link joint is a pivot joint with a swiveling range of 2° max. This prevents the drag link from tilting.

  12.  
  13. Inspect the tie rod ends for play or damage and repair as necessary.

To install:

  1. Clean any grease or debris from the tie rod ends and drag link attaching points.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Drag link and the attaching nuts to the idler arm and pitman arm and tighten the drag link nuts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Tie rod ends into the steering knuckles and tighten the nuts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Steering dampener and tighten to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     

  4.  
  5. Adjust the front toe setting on the vehicle.
  6.  

Idler Arm



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Drag link from the idler arm by removing the idler arm nut
     
    Heat shield
     
    Nut and bolt and remove the idler arm from the vehicle
     
    Pinch-bolt on the idler arm
     
    Idler arm bushing from the idler arm
     

  8.  
  9. Inspect the idler arm bushing and replace as necessary.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Idler arm bushing to the idler arm
     

  2.  
  3. Adjust the idler arm bushing to the reference dimension.

    Idler arm pinch bolt and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
     
    Idler arm to the vehicle
     
    Nut and bolt on the idler arm and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Heat shield
     
    Drag link to the idler arm and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     

  4.  

Pitman Arm



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Using Special Tool 9168 or a suitable ball joint puller remove the drag link from the pitman arm.
  8.  
  9. Measure the distance between the pitman arm and the steering gear using a caliper and record the measurement for use during installation.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Snap ring that holds the pitman arm on the shaft
     
    Pitman arm by loosening the pinch bolt and prying it from the shaft

  12.  

To install:

  1. Remove any oil and grease from the splined section of the pitman arm shaft and the pitman arm.
  2.  
  3. Install the pitman arm to the pitman arm shaft and install the snap ring.
  4.  
  5. Install the pitman arm to the previously measured depth of measurement and tighten the pinch bolt to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  6.  

Steering Damper



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut and bolt from the steering damper mounting bracket
     
    Nut and bolt from the drag link
     
    Steering damper from the vehicle

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering damper into the vehicle
     
    Nut and bolt to the drag link and tighten to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Bolt and nut to the steering damper bracket and tighten to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
