Brake Pads

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Press the caliper piston back into the bore with a suitable prytool. Use a large C-clamp to drive the piston into the bore of additional force is required.
  8.  
  9. Remove the caliper mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Rotate the caliper rearward off the rotor and out from its mount.
  12.  
  13. Set the caliper on a crate or sturdy box, then remove the inboard and outboard brake pads. The inboard pad has a spring clip that holds it in the caliper. Tilt this pad out at the top to unseat the clip. The outboard pad has a retaining spring that secures it in the caliper. Unseat 1 spring end and rotate the pad out of the caliper.

  15. Secure the caliper to a chassis or suspension component with a sturdy wire. Do not let it hang from the hose.

To install:

  1. Clean the caliper and steering knuckle sliding surfaces with a wire brush. Then, apply a coat of Mopar®multi-mileage grease or equivalent.
  2.  
  3. Clean the caliper slide pins with brake cleaner or brake fluid. Then apply a light coating of silicone grease to the pins.
    NOTE
    If there is minor rust or corrosion on the pins, first polish them with a crocus cloth. If they are severely rusted, replace them.

  5. Install the inboard pad and its spring clip.
  6.  
  7. Install the outboard brake pad.
  8.  
  9. Install the caliper over the rotor and seat it in its original position until flush.
  10.  
  11. Final tighten the caliper slide pins to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the wheels.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Pump the brakes several times to seat the pads.

  3. Raise and support vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.
  6.  
  7. Compress the caliper.
  8.  
  9. Remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the caliper from the caliper adapter.
    NOTE
    Do not allow brake hose to support caliper assembly.

  12.  
  13. Support and hang the caliper.
  14.  
  15. Remove the inboard brake pad from the caliper adapter.
  16.  
  17. Remove the outboard brake pad from the caliper adapter.
  18.  
  19. Remove the anti-rattle clips from the pad.

To install:

  1. Bottom pistons in caliper bore with C-clamp. Place an old brake shoe between a C-clamp and caliper piston.
  2.  
  3. Clean caliper mounting adapter.
  4.  
  5. Install new anti-rattle clips to the brake pads.
  6.  
  7. Install inboard brake pad in adapter.
  8.  
  9. Install outboard brake pad in adapter.
  10.  
  11. Install the caliper over rotor. Then, push the caliper onto the adapter.
  12.  
  13. Install caliper slide pin bolts.
  14.  
  15. Install wheel and tire assemblies and lower vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Apply brakes several times to seat caliper pistons and brake shoes and obtain firm pedal.
  18.  
  19. Top off master cylinder fluid level.
  20.
