Coil Springs

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm on a floor jack.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Lower ball joint.
     

  6.  
  7. Lower the jack and remove the coil spring.

To install:

  1. Install the coil spring and raise the control arm into position.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 135 ft. lbs. (183 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Front wheel

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer bar link from the lower suspension arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shock absorber.
  10.  
  11. Install a spring compressor up through the lower suspension arm, coil spring and upper shock mounting hole.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the tool lower nut to compress the coil spring.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower ball joint nut and separate the ball joint from the knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the spring compressor lower nut to relieve spring tension.
  18.  
  19. Remove the tool and pull down on the lower suspension arm to remove the spring.
  20.  

To install:


NOTE
The ramped or open end of the coil spring is the bottom of the spring.

  1. Tape the isolator pad to the top of the coil spring. Position the spring in the lower suspension arm pocket. Be sure that the coil spring is seated in the pocket.
  2.  
  3. Install a spring compressor up through the lower suspension arm, coil spring upper shock mounting hole.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the tool nut to compress the coil spring.
  6.  
  7. Install the lower ball joint into the knuckle and tighten the nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm). Install cotter pin.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spring compressor tool.
  10.  
  11. Install the stabilizer bar link to the lower suspension arm and tighten nut to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
  12.  
  13. Install the shock absorber.
  14.  
  15. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove support and lower the vehicle.
  18.  

The front suspension utilizes coil over shock design; the shock absorber and coil spring are removed as a unit. A Branick 7200® or equivalent spring removal/installation tool will be required to service the spring.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove the shock.
  4.  
  5. Install the shock assembly in the Branick 7200T spring removal/installation tool or equivalent.

  7. Compress the spring.
  8.  
  9. Position Wrench, Special Tool 9362, or equivalent, on shock shaft retaining nut. Next, insert 8 mm socket though Wrench onto hex located on end of shock shaft. While holding shock shaft from turning, remove nut from shock shaft using Wrench.

  11. Remove the upper shock nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shock.
  14.  
  15. Remove the shock upper mounting plate.
  16.  
  17. Remove and inspect the upper and lower spring isolators.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the lower isolator.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper isolator.
  4.  
  5. Position the shock into the coil spring.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper shock mounting plate.
  8.  
  9. Install Wrench (on end of a torque wrench), Special Tool 9362, on shock shaft retaining nut. Next, insert 8 mm socket though Wrench onto hex located on end of shock shaft. While holding shock shaft from turning, tighten nut using Wrench to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.) torque.
  10.  
  11. Install the shock upper mounting nut.
  12.  
  13. Decompress the spring.
  14.  
  15. Remove the shock assembly from the spring compressor tool.
  16.  
  17. Install the shock assembly.
  18.
