Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:


  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Upper mount nut
     
    Lower mount bolt
     
    Shock absorber
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber. Tighten the lower bolt to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm) and the upper nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).

The front suspension utilizes coil over shock design; the shock absorber and coil spring are removed as a unit. A Branick 7200® or equivalent spring removal/installation tool will be required to service the shock.


NOTE
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Support the lower control arm outboard end.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper shock nuts.

  9. Remove the stabilizer link lower nut and then separate the stabilizer link from the lower control arm to gain access to the lower shock nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower shock bolt and nut.

  13. Remove the shock.

To install:


NOTE
All suspension components should be tightened with the weight of the vehicle on them (curb height).

  1. Install the upper part of the shock into the frame bracket.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper nuts. Tighten to 102 Nm (75 ft. lbs.).
  4.  
  5. Install the lower part of the shock into the lower control arm shock bushing.
  6.  
  7. Position shock module clevis to lower control arm. Install bolt so head of bolt is facing rear of vehicle and hand start nut. Tighten the bolt and nut to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the stabilizer link lower nut to the lower control arm. Tighten to 125 ft. lbs. (169 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Remove the support from the lower control arm outboard end.
  12.  
  13. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  16.  

2-Wheel Drive

NOTE
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  1. Remove the upper shock nut, retainer and grommet from the shock absorber stud.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower mounting bolts and remove shock absorber through the lower suspension arm.

To install:


NOTE
The upper shock nut must be replaced or use Mopar Lock -N Seal or Loctite® 242 on existing nut.

  1. Install the lower retainer (lower retainer is stamped with an L) and grommet on the shock absorber stud and extend the shock. Insert the shock absorber through the lower suspension arm and upper mounting hole.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower mounting bolts and tighten to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.).
  4.  
  5. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper grommet and retainer (upper retainer is stamped with a U) on the shock absorber stud. Install a new nut or use Mopar Lock -N Seal or Loctite® 242 on the existing nut and tighten to 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.).

4-Wheel Drive

NOTE
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  1. Raise and support vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper shock absorber nut, retainer and grommet.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower bolt and remove the shock absorber.
  6.

NOTE
Upper shock nut must be replaced or use Mopar Lock -N Seal or Loctite® 242 on existing nut.

  1. Install the lower retainer (lower retainer is stamped with an L) and grommet on the shock absorber stud. Insert the shock absorber through the frame bracket hole.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower bolt and tighten the bolt to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.).
  4.  
  5. Install the upper grommet, retainer (upper retainer is stamped with a U) and new nut or use Mopar Lock -N Seal or Loctite® 242 on existing nut, on the shock absorber stud. Tighten nut to 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.).
