Stabilizer Bar (Sway Bar) & Links

Removal & Installation



2-Wheel Drive
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper link nut, retainer and grommet from each link.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizer bar retainer bolts and remove the retainers and stabilizer bar from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bushings from the stabilizer bar.
    NOTE
    If bushings are to be reused, do not cut the old bushings off the stabilizer bar; use a mixture of soapy water to aid in sliding the bushings off the bar.

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the bushings on the stabilizer bar using a mixture of soapy water or equivalent in order to slide the bushing over the bar with ease.
    WARNING
    Do not cut the new bushing for installation.

  2.  
  3. Install the stabilizer bar on the frame and install the retainers and the bolts.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
    NOTE
    Ensure the bar is centered with equal spacing on both sides.

  6.  
  7. Install the upper link grommet, retainer and nut and tighten to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove support and lower vehicle.
  10.  

4-Wheel Drive

NOTE
To service the stabilizer bar the vehicle must be on a drive on hoist. The vehicle suspension must be at curb height for stabilizer bar installation.

  1. Remove the stabilizer bar retainer bolts from the lower suspension arms and remove the retainers.
  2.  
  3. Remove the stabilizer bar retainer nuts, bolts and retainers from the frame crossmember and remove the bar.
  4.  
  5. If necessary, remove the bushings from the stabilizer bar.
    NOTE
    If bushings are to be reused, do not cut the old bushings off the stabilizer bar; use a mixture of soapy water to aid in sliding the bushings off the bar.

To install:


NOTE
To service the stabilizer bar the vehicle must be on a drive on hoist. The vehicle suspension must be at curb height for stabilizer bar installation.

  1. If removed, install the bushings on the stabilizer bar using a mixture of soapy water or equivalent in order to slide the bushing over the bar with ease.
    WARNING
    Do not cut the new bushing for installation.

  2.  
  3. Position the stabilizer bar on the frame crossmember brackets and install the retainers and nuts and bolts finger-tight.
    NOTE
    Ensure the bar is centered with equal spacing on both sides.

  4.  
  5. Install the stabilizer bar to the lower suspension arm.
  6.  
  7. Install the retainers and bolts to the lower suspension arm and tighten to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the frame retainer nuts to 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.).
  10.  
  11. Tighten the frame retainer bolts to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.).
