Wheel Bearings

Adjustment



Dakota models utilize a hub/bearing assembly which is not adjustable.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper and rotor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ABS wheel speed sensor if equipped.
  10.  
  11. Remove the halfshaft nut (4WD).
    NOTE
    Do not strike the knuckle with a hammer to remove the tie rod end or the ball joint. Damage to the steering knuckle will occur.

  12.  
  13. Pull down on the steering knuckle to separate the halfshaft from the hub/bearing (4WD).
  14.  
  15. Remove the three hub/bearing mounting bolts from the steering knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Slide the hub/bearing out of the steering knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the brake dust shield.

To install:

  1. Install the brake dust shield.
  2.  
  3. Install the hub/bearing into the steering knuckle and tighten the bolts to 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.).
  4.  
  5. Install the brake rotor and caliper.
  6.  
  7. Install the ABS wheel speed sensor if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Install the halfshaft nut and tighten to 251 Nm (185 ft. lbs.) (4WD).
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the support and lower vehicle.
  14.  

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Spindle nut
     
    Hub and bearing assembly

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub and bearing assembly
     
    Spindle nut. Tighten the nut to 185 ft. lbs. (251 Nm).
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Hub retainer nut
     
    Hub and bearing assembly

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub and bearing assembly. Tighten the bolts to 123 ft. lbs. (166 Nm).
     
    Hub retainer nut. Tighten the nut to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm).
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Front wheel
