Axle Shaft, Bearing & Seal

Removal & Installation



8.25 Inch Axle
Axle Bearings
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove the axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle shaft seal from the axle tube with a small pry bar.
    NOTE
    The seal and bearing can be removed at the same time with the bearing removal tool.

  6.  
  7. Remove the axle shaft bearing with Bearing Removal Tool Set 6310 and Adapter Foot 6310-9, or equivalent.
  8.

  1. Wipe the axle tube bore clean. Remove any old sealer or burrs from the tube.
  2.  
  3. Install the axle shaft bearing with Installer C-4198 and Handle C-4171, or equivalent.
    NOTE
    Install the bearing with part number against the installer.

  4.  
  5. Install a new axle seal with Installer C-4076-B and Handle C-4735-1, or equivalent. When the tool contacts the axle tube, the seal is installed to the correct depth.
  6.  
  7. Coat the lip of the seal with axle lubricant and install the axle shaft.
  8.  
  9. Apply a bead of Mopar red Silicone Rubber Sealant or equivalent to the housing cover.
    NOTE
    If the cover is not installed within 3 to 5 minutes, the cover must be cleaned and new RTV applied or adhesion quality will be compromised.

  10.  
  11. Install the cover and tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
  12.  
  13. Fill the differential with gear lubricant to bottom of the fill plug hole and install fill plug.
  14.  

Axle Shaft Seals
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove the axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle shaft seal from the end of the axle tube with a small pry bar.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Wipe the axle tube bore clean. Remove any old sealer or burrs from the tube.
  2.  
  3. Install a new axle seal with Installer C-4076-B and Handle C-4735-1, or equivalent. When the tool contacts the axle tube, the seal is installed to the correct depth.
  4.  
  5. Coat the lip of the seal with axle lubricant for protection prior to installing the axle shaft.
  6.  
  7. Install the axle shaft.
  8.  
  9. Apply a bead of Mopar red Silicone Rubber Sealant or equivalent to the housing cover.
    NOTE
    If the cover is not installed within 3 to 5 minutes, the cover must be cleaned and new RTV applied or adhesion quality will be compromised.

  10.  
  11. Install the cover and tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
  12.  
  13. Fill the differential with gear lubricant to the bottom of the fill plug hole and install the fill plug.
  14.  

Axle Shafts
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Place the transmission in neutral and raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake drum/caliper and rotor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the differential cover and drain the lubricant.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the differential case to access the pinion shaft lock screw. Remove the lock screw and pinion shaft from the differential case.
  10.  
  11. Push the axle shaft inward then remove axle shaft C-lock.
  12.  
  13. Remove the axle shaft being careful not to damage the shaft bearing and seal.
  14.  
  15. Inspect the axle shaft seal for leakage or damage.
  16.  
  17. Inspect the axle shaft bearing contact surface for signs of brinelling, galling and pitting.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the bearing bore and seal lip with gear lubricant. Insert the axle shaft through the seal, bearing and engage it into side gear splines.
    NOTE
    Use care to prevent shaft splines from damaging axle shaft seal lip.

  2.  
  3. Insert the C-lock in end of axle shaft. Push the axle shaft outward to seat the C-lock in side gear.
  4.  
  5. Insert the pinion shaft into differential case and through thrust washers and differential pinions.
  6.  
  7. Align hole in shaft with the hole in the differential case and install the lock screw with Loctite® on the threads. Tighten the lock screw to 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.).
  8.  
  9. Apply a bead of Mopar red silicone rubber sealant or equivalent to the housing cover.
    NOTE
    If the cover is not installed within 3 to 5 minutes, the cover must be cleaned and new RTV applied or adhesion quality will be compromised.

  10.  
  11. Install the cover and tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
  12.  
  13. Fill the differential with gear lubricant to the bottom of the fill plug hole.
  14.  
  15. Install the fill hole plug.
  16.  
  17. Install the brake drum/rotor and caliper.
  18.

Axle Bearings
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.

  3. Remove the axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle shaft seal from the end of the axle tube with a small pry bar.
    NOTE
    The seal and bearing can be removed at the same time with the bearing removal tool.

  6.  
  7. Remove the axle shaft bearing with Bearing Remover 6310 and Foot 6310-9, or equivalent.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Wipe the axle tube bore clean. Remove any old sealer or burrs from the tube.
  2.  
  3. Install the axle shaft bearing with Installer C-4198 and Handle C-4171, or equivalent. Drive the bearing in until tool contacts the axle tube.
    NOTE
    Bearing is installed with the bearing part number against the installer.

  4.  
  5. Coat the lip of the new axle seal with axle lubricant and install with Installer C-4076-B and Handle C-4735-1, or equivalent.
  6.  
  7. Install the axle shaft.
  8.  

Axle Shaft Seals

  3. Remove the axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle shaft seal from the end of the axle tube with a small pry bar.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Wipe the axle tube bore clean. Remove any old sealer or burrs from the tube.
  2.  
  3. Coat the lip of the new seal with axle lubricant and install a seal with Installer C-4076-B and Handle C-4735-1, or equivalent. When the tool contacts the axle tube, the seal is installed to the correct depth.
  4.  
  5. Install the axle shaft.
  6.  

Axle Shafts
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Place the transmission in neutral.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper, adapter and rotor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the differential housing cover and drain lubricant.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the differential case so the pinion mate shaft lock screw is accessible. Remove the lock screw and pinion mate shaft from the differential case.
  10.  
  11. Push the axle shaft inward and remove the axle shaft C-lock from the axle shaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the axle shaft. Use care to prevent damage to the axle shaft bearing and seal in the axle tube.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the bearing bore and seal lip with gear lubricant. Insert the axle shaft through seal, bearing, and engage it into the side gear splines.
    NOTE
    Use care to prevent the shaft splines from damaging the axle shaft seal.

  2.  
  3. Insert the C-lock in end of the axle shaft then push the axle shaft outward to seat the C-lock in the side gear.
  4.  
  5. Insert the pinion shaft into the differential case and through the thrust washers and differential pinions.
  6.  
  7. Align the hole in shaft with the hole in the differential case and install the lock screw with Loctite® on the threads. Tighten the lock screw to 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.).
  8.  
  9. Install the differential cover and fill with gear lubricant.
  10.  
  11. Install the brake rotor, caliper adapter and caliper.
  12.  

C-Clip Type
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake drum
     
    Differential cover
     
    Differential gear shaft retainer
     
    Differential gear shaft
     
    C-clip
     
    Axle shaft
     
    Axle seal
     
    Axle bearing
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Axle bearing
     
    Axle seal
     
    Axle shaft
     
    C-clip
     
    Differential gear shaft. Use Loctite® and tighten the retainer to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     
    Differential cover. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Brake drum
     
    Rear wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the axle assembly with gear oil and check for leaks.
  4.  

Non C-Clip Type
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor, if equipped
     
    Brake drum, if equipped
     
    Axle retainer nuts
     
    Axle shaft, seal and bearing assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Split the bearing retainer with a chisel and remove the retainer ring.
  6.  
  7. Press the bearing off the axle shaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the axle seal and retaining plate.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the retaining plate and axle seal onto the axle shaft.
  2.  
  3. Pack the wheel bearing with axle grease and press the bearing on to the axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Press the retaining ring onto the axle shaft.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Axle shaft, seal and bearing assembly. Tighten the nuts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
     
    Brake caliper and rotor, if equipped
     
    Brake drum, if equipped
     
    Rear wheel
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the axle assembly with gear oil and check for leaks.
  10.
