Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Support the vehicle at the frame rails.
  4.  
  5. Support the rear axle with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Axle U-bolts
     
    Spring bracket
     
    Leaf spring

NOTE
The weight of the vehicle must be supported by the springs when the spring eye and stabilizer bar fasteners are tightened.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Leaf spring
     
    Spring bracket
     
    Axle U-bolts. Tighten the nuts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Rear wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Tighten the front spring eye bolt and nut to 115 ft. lbs. (156 Nm). Tighten the rear spring eye bolt and nut to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm). Tighten the stabilizer bar nuts 55 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
    CAUTION
    The rear of the vehicle must be lifted only with a jack or hoist. The lift must be placed under the frame rail crossmember located aft of the rear axle. Use care to avoid bending the side rail flange.

  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle at the frame.
  4.  
  5. Use a hydraulic jack to relieve the axle weight.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nuts, the U-bolts and spring plate from the axle and.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nut and bolt from the spring front eye.
  12.  
  13. Remove the nut and bolt that attaches the spring shackle to the rear frame bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the spring from the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the shackle from the spring.

To install:

  1. Install the spring shackle on the spring finger tight.
  2.  
  3. Position the spring on the rear axle pad. Make sure the spring center bolt is inserted in the pad locating hole.
  4.  
  5. Align front spring eye with the bolt hole in the front frame bracket. Install the spring eye bolt and nut and tighten the spring eye nut finger-tight.
  6.  
  7. Align spring shackle eye with the bolt hole in the rear frame bracket. Install the bolt and nut and tighten the spring shackle eye nut finger-tight.
  8.  
  9. Install the spring seat (4x4 only), U-bolts, spring plate and nuts.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the U-bolt nuts to 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.).
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel and tire assemblies.
  14.  
  15. Remove the support stands from under the frame rails. Lower the vehicle until the springs are supporting the weight of the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the spring eye pivot bolt nut and all shackle nuts to 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
    CAUTION
    The rear of the vehicle must be lifted only with a jack or hoist. The lift must be placed under the frame rail crossmember located aft of the rear axle. Use care to avoid bending the side rail flange.

  5. Use a hydraulic jack to relieve the axle weight.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nuts, the U-bolts and spring plate from the axle.
  10.  
  11. Loosen and remove the bolt and then remove the flag nut through the access hole in the bracket from the spring front eye.
  12.  
  13. Remove the nut and bolt that attaches the spring shackle to the rear frame bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the spring from the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the shackle from the spring.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the spring shackle on the spring finger tight.
  2.  
  3. Position the spring on the rear axle pad. Make sure the spring center bolt is inserted in the pad locating hole.
  4.  
  5. Align front spring eye with the bolt hole in the front frame bracket. Install the spring eye bolt and flag nut through the access hole in the frame and tighten the bolt finger-tight.
  6.  
  7. Align spring shackle eye with the bolt hole in the rear frame bracket. Install the bolt and nut and tighten the spring shackle eye nut finger-tight.
  8.  
  9. Install the U-bolts, spring plate and nuts.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the U-bolt nuts to 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.).
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel and tire assemblies.
  14.  
  15. Remove the support stands from under the frame rails. Lower the vehicle until the springs are supporting the weight of the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the spring eye pivot bolt and flag nut to 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.).
  18.  
  19. Tighten the upper shackle bolt and nut and the lower shackle bolt and nut to 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.).
