Power Sunroof

Diagnosis & Testing

Refer to the list below for possible causes. Before beginning sunroof diagnostics verify that all other power accessories are in proper operating condition. If not, a common electrical problem may exist. Refer to Wiring Diagrams, in this publication for circuit, splice and component descriptions. Check the condition of the circuit protection (20 amp circuit breaker in the Junction Block). Inspect all wiring connector pins for proper engagement and continuity. Check for battery voltage at the power sunroof controller, refer to Wiring Diagrams, for circuit information. If battery voltage of more than 10 volts is detected at the controller, proceed with the following tests (the controller will not operate at less than 10 volts).

  1. Sunroof motor inoperative. Possible causes:

    Faulty control switch.

Faulty circuit ground between sunroof module, control switch, and body harness.

Faulty power circuit between sunroof module, control switch, and body harness.

    Faulty sunroof drive motor.

    Faulty sunroof module.

  2.
  3. Audible whine when switch is depressed, sunroof does not operate. Possible causes:

    Binding cable.

    Faulty sunroof drive motor.

  4.
  5. Audible clicking or ratcheting when switch is pressed, sunroof does not operate. Possible causes:

    Broken or worn drive cable.

    Worn drive motor gear.

    Mechanisms not synchronized.

  6.
  7. Sunroof vents and opens, but does not close. Possible causes:

    Broken or disengaged trough guide

    Binding cable.

    Faulty circuit.

    Faulty control switch.

    Faulty sunroof module.

    Faulty drive motor.

  8.
  9. Sunroof vents, but does not open. Possible causes:

    Faulty control switch.

    Faulty circuit.

    Binding cable or mechanism.

    Faulty sunroof module.

  10.
  11. Sunroof does not vent. Possible causes:

    Faulty control switch.

    Faulty circuit.

    Binding cable or mechanism.

    Faulty sunroof module.

  12.

Any diagnosis of the power sunroof system should begin with the use of a scan tool and the proper Diagnostic Procedures Information. The scan tool can provide confirmation that the Controller Area Network (CAN) Data Bus circuit is functional, that all of the electronic modules are sending and receiving the proper messages on the CAN Data Bus, and that the power sunroof motor/module assembly is being sent the proper hard wired output by the sunroof switch.

Removal & Installation
Motor
Club Cab
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  4.
  5. Remove headliner:
    1. Pull the top of each door seal downward slightly
    2.
    3. Using a trim stick or another suitable wide flat-bladed tool, gently pry the edges of the upper door striker trim cover away from the headliner far enough to disengage the two snap clips that secure the cover to the upper roof rail
    4.
    5. Determine which side of the vehicle the headliner will be removed from. Remove the two screws that secure the seat belt turning loop and height adjuster bracket to the upper roof rail and position it aside
    6.
    7. Remove the upper C-pillar trim panels
    8.
    9. Remove the A-pillar trim panels
    10.
    11. Disconnect the wire harness connector located at the right A-pillar
    12.
    13. If equipped, disconnect the headliner wire harness connector from the inside rear view mirror. If equipped, remove the overhead console
    14.
    15. Remove the sun visors and sun visor supports
    16.
    17. If equipped, remove the front and rear dome lamp
    18.
    19. Remove the two coat hooks
    20.
    21. Remove the front seat headrests
    22.
    23. Remove the cab back trim panel
    24.
    25. Remove the rear jumper seat headrests
    26.
    27. Remove the rear jumper seat headrest sleeves from the headliner
    28.
    29. Lower the rear of the headliner and disconnect the headliner wire harness connector from the center high mounted stop lamp
    30.
    31. Recline the front seats
      NOTE
Be careful not to crease the headliner.

    32.
    33. Lower the front of the headliner and remove the headliner through the door opening where the seat belt turning loop and height adjuster was disconnected from the upper roof rail
    34.

  6.
  7. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  8.
  9. Remove three motor assembly attaching screws from bottom side of motor assembly and remove motor assembly from the motor bracket.
  10.

To install:

  1. If sunroof was open when drive motor was removed, carefully move glass panel into closed position and remove glass panel. Set lifter arm timing by manually sliding the mechanisms in the track until timing holes in the trollies are aligned with the timing holes in the lifter arm cams and insert pins into the mechanisms to hold mechanisms in closed position.
  2.
  3. Place motor into position and install screws attaching motor to bracket. Tighten the screws 26 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  4.
  5. If sunroof glass panel was removed previously, remove the timing pins and install the sunroof glass panel.
  6.
  7. Partially install the headliner and connect the sunroof wiring electrical connectors.
  8.
  9. Temporarily install sunroof switch and perform the sunroof motor teach procedure.
