Lower Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the disc brake caliper assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the disc brake rotor.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor at the wheel well.
  12.  
  13. Remove tie rod end jam nut.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the tie rod from the knuckle using special tool C-3894-A, or equivalent.
  16.  
  17. Remove the front halfshaft nut (4WD models).
  18.  
  19. Remove the upper ball joint nut. Separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle with a remover.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower ball joint nut. Separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle with a remover.
  22.  
  23. Remove the steering knuckle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the stabilizer bar link
  26.  
  27. Remove the shock absorber lower bolt and nut.
  28.  
  29. Remove the lower control arm bolts, nuts and washers.
  30.  
  31. Remove the lower control arm from the vehicle.

To install:


NOTE
All suspension components should be tightened with the weight of the vehicle on them (curb height).

  1. Position the lower control arm at the frame rail brackets. Install the pivot bolts washers and nuts. Tighten the nuts finger-tight.
    WARNING
    The ball joint stud taper must be CLEAN and DRY before installing the knuckle. Clean the stud taper with mineral spirits to remove dirt and grease.

  3. Install the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Insert the lower ball joint into the steering knuckle. Install and tighten the retaining nut to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install shock absorber lower bolt and nut. Tighten to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the front halfshaft nut (4WD models).
  10.  
  11. Insert the upper ball joint into the steering knuckle. Install and tighten the retaining nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the stabilizer bar link and tighten to 169 Nm (125 ft. lbs.).
  14.  
  15. Tighten the lower control arm pivot nut and bolts to 244 Nm (180 ft. lbs.).
  16.  
  17. Insert the outer tie rod end into the steering knuckle. Install and tighten the retaining nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the disc brake rotor.
  20.  
  21. Install the disc brake caliper and adapter assembly and tighten to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
  22.  
  23. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Perform a wheel alignment.
