Wheel Speed Sensors

Removal & Installation



Commercial
  1. Turn the ignition OFF .
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel speed sensor connector from the wheel speed sensor.
    NOTE
    Do not reuse the wheel speed sensor after it has been removed.

  8.  
  9. Remove and discard the wheel speed sensor.

To install:

Fig. A special tool such as J44252 should be used to ensure proper seating of the rear wheel speed sensor.


NOTE
The connector of the wheel speed sensor must point toward the brake caliper.

  1. Insert the wheel speed sensor onto the hub assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the ring of tool J44252 or equivalent onto the wheel speed sensor.
  4.  
  5. Pull tool J44252 or equivalent to seat the wheel speed sensor.
  6.  
  7. Test the output of the wheel speed sensor, as follows:
    1. Connect a digital multimeter to the wheel speed sensor connector.
    2.  
    3. Set the multimeter to AC voltage.
    4.  
    5. By hand, spin the wheel.
      NOTE
      For a proper wheel speed sensor signal, the AC voltage will measure greater than 100 mV while the wheel is spinning.

  9. Install the wheel speed sensor connector to the wheel speed sensor.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear wheel.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  

Except Commercial
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper.
  6.  
  7. Remove the caliper bracket..
  8.  
  9. Remove the rotor.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hub and bearing assembly.

  15. Remove any corrosion from the hub mating surface.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the hub and bearing assembly.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the hub mounting bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Reconnect the wheel speed sensor.
  6.  
  7. Install the caliper bracket.
  8.  
  9. Install the rotor.
  10.  
  11. Install the caliper.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the caliper bracket mounting bolts to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Tighten the parking brake cable bracket bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.
