Ignition Coil

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the spark plug wires for corresponding ignition coils at ignition control module assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ignition coil retaining bolts (2 per coil).
  4.  
  5. Remove the coil from the IC module assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coil to the IC module assembly with the 2 retaining bolts.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the 2 retaining bolts to 30 inch lbs. (3.5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the spark plug wires at the IC module assembly.
  6.  

Bank 1
  1. Remove the fuel injector sight shield.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ignition control module electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the secondary air injection (AIR) vent solenoid electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the AIR shutoff valve.
  8.  
  9. Using the removal sequence, remove the ignition cassette retaining bolts.

  11. Carefully remove the ignition cassette.
  12.  

To install:


NOTE
Be sure the ignition cassette grounding spring and insulator are in place when installing the ignition cassette.

  1. Connect the spark plug boots to the spark plugs. Carefully install the ignition cassette.
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition cassette retaining bolts.
  4.  
  5. Using the installation torque sequence, tighten the ignition cassette retaining bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).

  7. Install the AIR shutoff valve.
  8.  
  9. Reconnect the AIR vent solenoid electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Reconnect the ignition cassette electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
  14.  

  1. Remove the fuel injector sight shield.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ignition coil cover from the cam cover by lifting straight up.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the secondary air injection (AIR) vent solenoid electrical connector, if necessary, to gain access to the individual coil being serviced.
  6.  
  7. Remove the AIR check valve, if necessary, to gain access to the individual coil being serviced.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the ignition coil wiring harness electrical connector from the coil that needs to be replaced.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ignition coil retaining bolt and carefully remove the ignition coil.
  12.  
  13. If removal of all the coils is necessary, disconnect the main coil wiring harness at the cam cover.

  14.  
  15. Remove the coil assembly retaining bolts and studs.
  16.  
  17. Carefully remove the ignition coil assembly.

To install:

  1. Carefully install the ignition coil assembly. Ensure that the spark plug seals are in position.
  2.  
  3. Install the coil assembly retaining bolts and studs and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the main coil wiring harness at the cam cover.
    NOTE
    Ensure that the spark plug seals are in place when installing the ignition coil.

  6.  
  7. Install the ignition coil.
  8.  
  9. Install the ignition coil retaining bolt and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the ignition coil electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Connect the AIR vent solenoid electrical connector, if disconnected during disassembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the AIR check valve, if removed during disassembly.
  16.  
  17. Install the ignition coil cover to the cam cover.
  18.  
  19. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
  20.  

Bank 2
  1. Remove the fuel injector sight shield.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ignition control module electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper filler panel.
  6.  
  7. Using the removal sequence, remove the ignition cassette retaining bolts.

  9. Carefully remove the ignition cassette.
  10.  

To install:


NOTE

  3. Install the ignition cassette retaining bolts.

  7. Reconnect the ignition cassette electrical connector.

  9. Install the upper filler panel.
  10.  
  11. Install the fuel injector sight shield.

  1. Remove the fuel injector sight shield.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper filler panel, if necessary, to gain access to the individual coil being serviced.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil cover from the cam cover by lifting straight up, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ignition coil wiring harness electrical connector from the coil that needs to be replaced.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ignition coil retaining bolt.
  10.  
  11. Carefully remove the ignition coil assembly.
  12.  
  13. If removal of all the coils is necessary, disconnect the main coil wiring harness at the cam cover.

  15. Remove the coil assembly bolts and studs.
  16.  
  17. Carefully remove the ignition coil assembly.

To install:

  1. Carefully install the ignition coil assembly. Ensure that the spark plug seals are in position.
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition coil assembly retaining bolts and studs and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  5. Connect the main coil wiring harness at the cam cover.
    NOTE
    Ensure that the spark plug seals are in place when installing the ignition coil.

  7. Install the ignition coil.
  8.  
  9. Install the ignition coil retaining bolt and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Reconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Install the ignition coil cover to the cam cover.
  14.  
  15. Install the upper filler panel, if removed during disassembly.
  16.  
  17. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
  18.
