Ignition Control Module

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the spark plug wires at the ignition control module assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the four electrical connectors at the ignition control module.
  4.  
  5. Remove the four bolts retaining the Ignition Control (IC) module assembly to rear camshaft cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the IC module assembly from the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ignition coils from the IC module assembly (2 bolts per coil).
  10.  
  11. Remove the IC module from the assembly bracket.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the IC module to the assembly bracket.
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition coils to the IC module assembly.
  4.  
  5. Position the IC module assembly on the rear camshaft cover and install the four retaining bolts.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the 4 retaining bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the four electrical connectors at the IC module assembly.
  10.  
  11. Connect the spark plug wires to the ignition control module/coil assembly.
  12.  

  1. Remove the ignition coil cassette. Refer to Ignition Coil Removal.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ignition control module retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition control module.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition control module and tighten retaining screws to 7 inch lbs. (0.8 Nm).
    NOTE
    Be sure the ignition cassette grounding spring and insulator are in place when installing the ignition cassette.

  3. Connect the spark plug boots to the spark plugs.
  4.  
  5. Carefully install the ignition cassette. Refer to Ignition Coil Removal.
  6.  

Bank 1
  1. Remove the engine sight shield retaining bolts and the engine sight shield.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ignition control module electrical connector.
    NOTE
    If the vehicle is equipped with secondary air injection (AIR), continue with step 3. If the vehicle is NOT equipped with AIR, continue with step 8

  4.  
  5. Disconnect the AIR vent solenoid electrical connector (if equipped with AIR).
  6.  
  7. Remove the AIR pipe to exhaust manifold bolts (if equipped with AIR).
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the AIR system vacuum hoses. Be sure to mark the locations for proper installation (if equipped with AIR).
  10.  
  11. Remove the AIR bracket to engine bolts (if equipped with AIR).
  12.  
  13. Remove the AIR assembly (if equipped with AIR).
  14.  
  15. Using the removal sequence, remove the ignition assembly retaining bolts.

  17. Carefully remove the ignition assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the ignition control module retaining screws.
  20.  
  21. Remove the ignition control module.

To install:

  1. Install the ignition control module. Install the ignition control module retaining screws and tighten to 7 inch lbs. (0.8 Nm).
    NOTE
    Be sure the ignition assembly grounding spring and insulator are in place when installing the ignition assembly.

  3. Connect the spark plug boots to the spark plugs.
  4.  
  5. Carefully install the ignition assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the ignition assembly retaining bolts. Using the installation torque sequence, tighten the ignition assembly retaining bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    NOTE
    If the vehicle is equipped with AIR continue with step 5. If the vehicle is NOT equipped with AIR, continue with step 12.

  9. Install the AIR assembly (if equipped with AIR).
  10.  
  11. Install the AIR bracket to engine bolts (if equipped with AIR).
  12.  
  13. Tighten the AIR bracket to engine nut/bolts.
  14.  
  15. Reconnect the AIR vacuum hoses (if equipped with AIR).
  16.  
  17. Reconnect the AIR pipe to exhaust manifold bolts (if equipped with AIR).
  18.  
  19. Tighten the AIR pipe to exhaust manifold bolts.
  20.  
  21. Reconnect the AIR vent solenoid electrical connector (if equipped with AIR).
  22.  
  23. Reconnect the ignition assembly electrical connector.
  24.  
  25. Install the engine sight shield and retaining bolts.
  26.  
  27. Tighten the engine sight shield retaining bolts to 70 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  28.  

Bank 2
  1. Remove the engine sight shield retaining bolts and the engine sight shield.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ignition control module electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine oil level indicator.
  6.  
  7. Using the removal sequence, remove the ignition assembly retaining bolts.

  9. Carefully remove the ignition assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ignition control module retaining screws.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition control module.

To install:

  1. Install the ignition control module.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the ignition control module retaining screws to 7 inch lbs. (0.8 Nm).
    NOTE

  5. Connect the spark plug boots to the spark plugs. Carefully install the ignition assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the ignition assembly retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Using the installation torque sequence, tighten the ignition assembly retaining bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).

  10.  
  11. Reconnect the ignition assembly electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Install the engine sight shield and retaining bolts.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the engine sight shield retaining bolts to 70 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the engine oil level indicator.
  18.
