Cooling Fan Connectors



Removal & Installation
  1. Remove the cooling fan assembly.
    CAUTION
     The fan blade retaining nut is left hand thread, damage may occur to motor threads if attempting to remove as a right hand thread nut.

  2.  
  3. Remove the fan blade retaining nut (5) from the motor (2).
  4.  
  5. Remove the fan blade (4) from the motor shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the motor retaining screws (3).
  8.  
  9. Remove the motor (2) from the shroud (1).

To install:


CAUTION
 Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the motor (2) to the shroud (1).
  2.  
  3. Install the motor retaining screws (3). Tighten the electric cooling fan motor mounting screws to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.).
  4.  
  5. Install the fan blade (4) to the motor shaft.
  6.  
  7. Install the fan blade retaining nut (5) to the motor (2). Tighten the electric cooling fan blade retaining nut to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.).
  8.  
  9. Install the cooling fan assembly.
  10.  

Removal & Installation




CAUTION
An electric fan under the hood can start up even when the engine is not running and can injure you. Keep hands, clothing and tools away from any underhood electric fan.


CAUTION
To help avoid personal injury or damage to the vehicle, a bent, cracked, or damaged fan blade or housing should always be replaced.


CAUTION
Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF , unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Recover refrigerant .
  4.  
  5. Remove the core support filler panels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left fender to core support brace.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air cleaner.
  10.  
  11. Remove the PCM from mounting and set aside.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hood release cable and set aside.
  14.  
  15. Remove the inflatable restraint front end discriminating sensor.
    CAUTION
    Be careful when you handle a sensor. Do not strike or jolt a sensor. Before applying power to a sensor:



    Remove any dirt, grease, etc. from the mounting surface
     
    Position the sensor horizontally on the mounting surface.
     
    Point the arrow on the sensor toward the front of the vehicle.
     
    Tighten all of the sensor fasteners and sensor bracket fasteners to the specified torque value.
     
    Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  17. Remove the left and right engine torque strut brackets from the core support and fold strut assembly back toward the engine.

  19. Remove the cooling fan attaching bolts
  20.  
  21. Remove the radiator upper support.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the cooling fan electrical connectors and remove the cooling fans.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the upper oil cooler line from the radiator.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the cooling fan electrical connectors.
  28.  
  29. Remove the cooling fans.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Install the cooling fans.
  2.  
  3. Connect the cooling fan electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. Connect the upper transmission cooler line to the radiator.
  6.  
  7. Position the cooling fans and install the retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the radiator upper support and retaining bolts.
  12.  
  13. Connect the hood release cable.
  14.  
  15. Install the PCM into the mounts.
  16.  
  17. Install the left fender to core support brace.
  18.  
  19. Install the core support upper filler panels
  20.  
  21. Install the left engine torque strut.
  22.  
  23. Install the inflatable restraint front end discriminating sensor.
  24.  
  25. Install the air cleaner.
  26.  
  27. Install the core support filler panels.
  28.  
  29. Recharge the A/C system.
  30.

  3. Remove the fan retaining nut from the motors.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fan from the motor shaft
  6.  
  7. Remove the motor retaining screws.
  8.  
  9. Remove the motor from the shroud.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the motor to the shroud.
  2.  
  3. Install the motor retaining screws and tighten the fan motor mounting screws to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the fan blade to the motor shaft.
  6.  
  7. Install the fan blade retaining nut to the motor and tighten to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the cooling fan assembly to the radiator.
  10.  
  11. Install the radiator to vehicle.
  12.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air deflector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine oil cooler pipe retaining bolt and retainer from the fan shroud.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the hood latch support.
  12.  
  13. Remove the headlamps.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the lower and upper engine oil cooler pipes from the radiator, and position aside.
  16.  
  17. Remove the inlet radiator hose from the radiator, and place aside over the engine.
  18.  
  19. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the upper transaxle oil cooler pipe retaining bolt from the fan shroud.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the upper transaxle oil cooler pipe from the radiator
  24.  
  25. Remove the outlet radiator hose from the radiator.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the lower transaxle oil cooler pipe from the radiator.
  28.  
  29. Remove the radiator mounting brackets.
  30.  
  31. In order to remove the fan shroud, position the radiator/condenser assembly as follows:

    Lift the assembly from the lower radiator support pads
     
    Tilt the top of the assembly forward

  33. Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connectors from the cooling fan motors.
  34.  
  35. Remove the clips attaching the harness to the fan shroud.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the retaining clip attaching the A/C discharge hose to the fan shroud.
  38.  
  39. Remove the two electric cooling fan mounting bolts.
    NOTE
    Care should be taken when removing the cooling fan assembly not to damage the lower attachment points of both the cooling fan assembly and radiator.

  40.  
  41. Remove the cooling fan assembly from the vehicle in the following order:

    Position the cooling fan assembly towards the right side of the vehicle.
     
    Pull upward on the right side of the fan assembly.
     
    Position the fan assembly towards the left side of the vehicle.
     
    Pull upward on the fan assembly removing the fan from the vehicle.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Recover refrigerant, as outlined in the Heating & AC Section7.
  4.  
  5. Remove the core support filler panels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left fender to core support brace.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air cleaner.
  10.  
  11. Remove the PCM from mounting and set aside.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hood release cable and set aside.
  14.  
  15. Remove the inflatable restraint front end discriminating sensor.
    CAUTION
    Be careful when you handle a sensor. Do not strike or jolt a sensor. Before applying power to a sensor:

  19. Remove the cooling fan attaching bolts

  23. Disconnect the cooling fan electrical connectors and remove the cooling fans.

  25. Disconnect the upper oil cooler line from the radiator.

  27. Disconnect the cooling fan electrical connectors.
  28.  
  29. Remove the cooling fans.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Install the cooling fans.
  2.  
  3. Connect the cooling fan electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. Connect the upper transmission cooler line to the radiator.
  6.  
  7. Position the cooling fans and install the retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the radiator upper support and retaining bolts.
  12.  
  13. Connect the hood release cable.
  14.  
  15. Install the PCM into the mounts.
  16.  
  17. Install the left fender to core support brace.
  18.  
  19. Install the core support upper filler panels
  20.  
  21. Install the left engine torque strut.
  22.  
  23. Install the inflatable restraint front end discriminating sensor.
  24.  
  25. Install the air cleaner.
  26.  
  27. Install the core support filler panels.
  28.  
  29. Recharge the A/C system.
  30.  

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper radiator support.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air deflector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine oil cooler pipe retaining clip and bolt from the fan shroud.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the radiator hose.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the upper engine oil cooler pipe from the radiator.
  16.  
  17. Remove the upper transaxle oil cooler pipe retaining bolt from the fan shroud.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the upper transaxle oil cooler pipe from the radiator
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connectors from the cooling fan motors.
  22.  
  23. Remove the clips attaching the harness to the fan shroud.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the 2 retainers from the A/C discharge hose.
  26.  
  27. Remove the 2 electric cooling fan mounting bolts.
    NOTE
    Care should be taken when removing the cooling fan assembly not to damage the lower attachment points of both the cooling fan assembly and radiator.

  28.  
  29. Remove the electric cooling fan assembly from the vehicle in the following order:

    Position the cooling fan assembly towards the left side of the vehicle.
     
    Pull upward on the right side of the fan assembly.
     
    Position the fan assembly towards the right side of the vehicle.
     
    Pull upward on the fan assembly removing the fan assembly from the vehicle.
     

  30.  

To install:


NOTE
Care should be taken when installing the cooling fan assembly not to damage the lower attachment points of both the cooling fan assembly and radiator.

  1. Install the cooling fan assembly to the vehicle in the following order:

  3. Position the cooling fan assembly behind the radiator.
  4.  
  5. Position the fan assembly towards the right side of the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Push downward on the right side of the fan assembly.
  8.  
  9. Move the fan assembly into position, aligning the lower feet of the fan shroud to the mounting tabs on the radiator.
    WARNING
     The bolts retaining the cooling fan to the radiator end tanks are a special length and should be the ONLY bolts used upon reinstallation. The use of longer bolts will damage the radiator end tanks.

  10.  
  11. Install the electric cooling fan mounting bolts and tighten to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the 2 retainers to the A/C discharge hose.
  14.  
  15. Connect the wiring harness electrical connectors to the cooling fan motors.
  16.  
  17. Attach the wiring harness retaining clips to the fan shroud.
  18.  
  19. Push the upper transaxle oil cooler pipe into the radiator quick connect fitting, until a "click" is heard.
  20.  
  21. Tug gently on the cooler pipe to ensure proper retention.
  22.  
  23. Install the upper transaxle oil cooler pipe retaining bolt to the fan shroud and tighten to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Connect the upper engine oil cooler pipe to the radiator and tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Connect the inlet radiator hose to the radiator.
  28.  
  29. Raise and support the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Install the engine oil cooler pipe retaining clip and bolt to the fan shroud and tighten to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install the air deflector.
  34.  
  35. Lower the vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Install the upper radiator support.
  38.  
  39. Fill the cooling system.
  40.  
  41. Connect the battery negative cable.
  42.  
  43. Inspect the engine oil level.
  44.
