Crankshaft Front Seal


Removal & Installation

  1. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Removal and Installation.
  3. Pry out the front cover seal using a screwdriver or a prybar.
    Use caution to prevent gouging of the front cover bore or crankshaft.

Fig. Use of special tools as shown will ensure proper installation of the front seal; full seating and alignment is critical to prevent leakage.

  1. Lubricate the seal lips with engine oil and position the seal to the front cover with the garter spring side toward the engine.
  3. Push seal into the engine front cover until the tool bottoms on the cover using tool J38818 and the crankshaft balancer installer J39344, or equivalents.
  5. Install the crankshaft balancer.

Do not remove the crankshaft front oil seal.

The crankshaft front oil seal is not serviced as an individual component. When replacing the crankshaft front oil seal install a NEW engine front cover. In order to precisely align the crankshaft front oil seal to the crankshaft balancer and crankshaft balancer dust shield the engine front cover and the crankshaft front oil seal are sold as an assembly.
