Flywheel or Flexplate & Ring Gear

Removal & Installation

Fig. Use a tool such as J44214 to secure flywheel in place.

  1. Remove the transaxle assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install tool J44214 or equivalent to the engine block.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the 8 engine flywheel mounting bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove 7 of the 8 flywheel bolts leaving 1 bolt at the top of the crankshaft rotation.
  8.  
  9. Grip the engine flywheel and remove the remaining bolt.
    NOTE
    Do not drop the engine flywheel when removing the final bolt.

  10.  
  11. Clean and inspect the engine flywheel.

  13. Inspect the engine flywheel for the following conditions:
    NOTE
    Do not attempt to repair the welded areas that retain the ring gear to the engine flywheel plate. Install a new engine flywheel.



    Stress cracks around the engine flywheel-to-torque converter mounting bolt hole locations (1) and/or engine flywheel-to-crankshaft (2, 4)
     
    Cracks at welded areas that retain the ring gear onto the engine flywheel (3)
