Steering Knuckle

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise the vehicle and suitably support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hub and bearing assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the tie rod end at the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the road sensing suspension sensor link.
  10.  
  11. Remove the strut to knuckle nuts and bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the knuckle.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install the strut-to-knuckle bolts.
  4.  
  5. Connect the lower ball joint to the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Connect the Road Sensing Suspension position sensor to the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Connect the tie rod at the knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Install the hub and bearing assembly.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the hub and bearing retaining bolts to 110 ft. lbs. (145 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Tighten the strut-to-knuckle nuts to 136 ft. lbs. (184 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Tighten the ball joint nut to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Tighten the nut an additional 120 degrees.
    NOTE
    When tightening the nut a minimum torque of 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) must be obtained. If 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) is not obtained, inspect the nut for stripped threads. If the threads are satisfactory, replace the ball joint and knuckle. If required, turn the nut up to an additional 60 degrees in order to allow for the installation of the cotter pin.

  19. Install the tire and wheel.
  20.  
  21. Tighten the wheel nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel bearing and hub assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the outer tie rod end at the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the road sensing suspension sensor link.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower ball joint cotter pin and retaining nut.
  12.  
  13. Separate the steering knuckle from the lower control arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the strut to steering knuckle retaining nuts and bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering knuckle.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install the strut to steering knuckle retaining bolts and nuts.
  4.  
  5. Connect the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Install the lower ball joint retaining nut.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the lower ball joint retaining nut to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Tighten an additional 150 degrees (2 1/2 flats) plus an additional 60 degrees rotation for cotter pin alignment. Do not back off nut for cotter pin alignment.
  12.  
  13. Install a new cotter pin.
  14.  
  15. Connect the Road Sensing Suspension position sensor link to the lower control arm.
  16.  
  17. Connect the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Install the wheel bearing and hub assembly.
  20.  
  21. Install the tire and wheel.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  

  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and tire.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper bolts.
  8.  
  9. Support and hang the caliper away from the brake rotor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rotor.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor connector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the hub and bearing retaining bolts.
  16.  
  17. Separate the hub from the drive axle.
  18.  
  19. Separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the strut to knuckle attaching nuts and bolts.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering knuckle.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering knuckle to the strut and tighten bolts to 136 ft. lbs. (185 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Insert the drive axle into the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Connect the lower ball joint.
  6.  
  7. Install the tie rod and tighten nut to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm) plus an additional 180-300 degrees (3-5 flats).
    NOTE
    For cotter pin alignment, tighten the nut up to, but do not exceed 60 degrees additional rotation. Do not back off nut for cotter pin alignment.

  9. Install the dust shield.
  10.  
  11. Install the hub and bearing to the steering knuckle/drive axle.
  12.  
  13. Install the hub and bearing retaining bolts and tighten to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the wheel speed sensor connector to the wheel speed sensor.
  16.  
  17. Install the rotor.
  18.  
  19. Install the caliper.
  20.  
  21. Install a punch through the caliper and rotor so it dose not rotate.
  22.  
  23. Install the drive axle nut and tighten to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the wheel and tighten to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Check wheel alignment.
  28.  

  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and tire.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rotor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front wheel bearing assembly
  8.  
  9. Separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Refer to
  12.  
  13. Remove the strut to knuckle attaching nuts and bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering knuckle.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering knuckle to the strut and tighten bolts to 136 ft. lbs. (185 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the lower ball joint.
  4.  
  5. Install the tie rod and tighten to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm) plus an additional 180-300 degrees (3-5 flats).
    NOTE
    For cotter pin alignment, tighten the nut up to, but do not exceed 60 degrees additional rotation. Do not back off nut for cotter pin alignment.

  7. Install the wheel hub bearing assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install the rotor.
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel and tire.
  12.  
  13. Check wheel alignment.
  14.  

  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and tire.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper bolts.
  8.  
  9. Support and hang the caliper away from the brake rotor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rotor.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor connector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the hub and bearing retaining bolts.
  16.  
  17. Separate the hub from the drive axle.
  18.  
  19. Separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the strut to knuckle attaching nuts and bolts.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering knuckle.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering knuckle to the strut and tighten bolts to 136 ft. lbs. (185 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Insert the drive axle into the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Connect the lower ball joint.
  6.  
  7. Install the tie rod and tighten nut to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm) plus an additional 180-300 degrees (3-5 flats).

    For cotter pin alignment, tighten the nut up to, but do not exceed 60 degrees additional rotation. Do not back off nut for cotter pin alignment.

  9. Install the dust shield.

  11. Install the hub and bearing to the steering knuckle/drive axle.
  12.  
  13. Install the hub and bearing retaining bolts and tighten to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the wheel speed sensor connector to the wheel speed sensor.
  16.  
  17. Install the rotor.
  18.  
  19. Install the caliper.
  20.  
  21. Install a punch through the caliper and rotor so it does not rotate.
  22.  
  23. Install the drive axle nut and tighten to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the wheel and tire and tighten to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Check wheel alignment.
  28.  

With Heavy Duty Suspension (Commercial Fe7)
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower ball joint cotter pin and nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake caliper bolts.
  10.  
  11. Support and hang the caliper away from the brake rotor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake rotor.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor connector.
  16.  
  17. Remove the hub and bearing retaining bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the hub and drive axle.
  20.  
  21. Separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Separate the ball joint from the lower control arm.
  24.  
  25. Remove the strut to knuckle attaching nuts and bolts.
  26.  
  27. Remove the steering knuckle.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering knuckle to the strut.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the strut to knuckle bolts to 131 ft. lbs. (177 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the lower ball joint and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm), then tighten an additional 190 degrees.
  6.  
  7. Install a new cotter pin.
  8.  
  9. Install the tie rod.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the tie rod end to knuckle nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 200 degrees.
    NOTE
    For cotter pin alignment, tighten the nut up to, but do not exceed 60 degrees additional rotation. Do not back off nut for cotter pin alignment.

  12.  
  13. Install the hub and bearing to the steering knuckle/drive axle.
  14.  
  15. Install the hub and bearing retaining bolts and tighten to 112 ft. lbs. (152 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Connect the wheel speed sensor connector to the wheel speed sensor.
  18.  
  19. Install the rotor.
  20.  
  21. Install the caliper.
  22.  
  23. Install the drive axle nut and tighten to 159 ft. lbs. (215 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the wheel and tire and tighten to 80 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Check wheel alignment.
  28.  

With Standard And Sport Suspension (Fe1, Fe3)
  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel bearing and hub.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower ball joint cotter pin and retaining nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the outer tie rod retaining nut.
  10.  
  11. Separate the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the strut to steering knuckle attaching nuts and bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering knuckle.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering knuckle to the lower ball joint and strut.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering knuckle to strut retaining bolts and nuts and tighten to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the lower ball joint retaining nut.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the lower ball joint retaining nut to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm) plus an additional 150 degrees.
    NOTE
    For cotter pin alignment, tighten the nut up to, but do not exceed 60 degrees additional rotation. Do not back off nut for cotter pin alignment.

  8.  
  9. Install a new cotter pin.
  10.  
  11. Install the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Install the outer tie rod retaining nut and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 200 degrees.
  14.  
  15. Install the wheel bearing and hub assembly.
  16.  
  17. Install the tire and wheel.
  18.  
  19. Check wheel alignment.
  20.
