Disassembly & Assembly

NOTE
A strut compressor tool will be required for the following procedure, which must be performed with the strut assembly removed from the vehicle.

NOTE
Care should be taken to avoid chipping or cracking the spring coating when handling the front suspension coil spring. Failure to observe this notice may result in spring breakage.

  1. Install the strut into the compressor.
  2.
  3. Turn the compressor forcing screw until the spring compresses slightly.
  4.
  5. Use a socket in order to hold the strut shaft from turning. Remove the 24 mm strut shaft nut using a 24 mm wrench.
  6.
  7. Guide the strut shaft out of the assembly.
  8.
  9. Loosen the compressor screw while guiding the strut shaft out of the assembly.
  10.
  11. Continue loosening the compressor screw until the strut and the spring may be removed.
  12.

To install:

  1. Install the strut in the compressor.
    NOTE
Be certain that the flat on the upper spring seat faces out from the centerline of the vehicle. When you mount the spring seat in the strut compressor, ensure that the spring seat faces in the same direction as the steering knuckle mounting flange.

    NOTE
If the bearing had been removed from the upper spring seat, install the bearing into the upper spring seat in the same orientation as it had been. Also, install the bearing in the spring seat before attaching to the strut mount.

  2.
  3. Install the spring over the strut in the correct position.
  4.
  5. Start turning the compressor screw clockwise on the tool, while centering the strut shaft in the assembly.
  6.
  7. Continue to turn the compressor forcing screw on the strut compressor until the strut shaft threads are visible through the top of the strut assembly.
  8.
  9. Install the washer and the nut and tighten the strut mount nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm) while holding the strut shaft with the socket.
  10.
  11. Remove the strut from the strut compressor.
  12.

Removal & Installation

WARNING
When working near the halfshafts, use care to prevent the inner Tripod CV-joint from being overextended. If the joint is overextended, the internal joint components could separate, resulting in CV-joint failure.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

    Front wheel

Electrical connector from the top of the strut, if equipped

    Upper strut mounting nuts

Road Sensing Suspension (RSS) position sensor from the lower control arm, if equipped

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) wheel speed sensor, if equipped

Wheel speed sensor from the strut bracket, if equipped

Brake line bracket from the strut

    Stabilizer link from the strut

  4.
  5. Scribe a mark on the strut referencing the lower strut bracket to the steering knuckle.
  6.
  7. Remove the strut.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly into the vehicle

Strut-to-knuckle bolts and nuts, but do not torque yet

Stabilizer link to the strut assembly, but do not torque the nuts yet

Brake line bracket to the strut

Speed sensor bracket on the strut, if equipped

    ABS sensor, if equipped

RSS sensor to the lower control arm, if equipped

Electrical connector to the top of the strut, if equipped

Upper strut mounting nuts. Torque the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).

  2.
  3. Torque the stabilizer link nuts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  4.
  5. Torque the strut-to-knuckle bolt to 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm).
  6.
  7. Install the front wheel. Torque the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  8.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
Care should be taken to avoid chipping or scratching the coating when handling the suspension coil spring. Damage to the coating can cause premature failure.
