Multi-Function (Combination) Switch

Removal & Installataion




CAUTION
If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in the Chassis Electrical Section.

  1. Disable the SIR system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hazard knob mounting bolt and hazard knob from the steering column.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wave washer from the upper steering shaft.
  8.  
  9. Install tool J23653-SIR or equivalent to the upper steering shaft and depress the shaft lock.

  11. Remove the bearing retainer from the upper steering shaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shaft lock.
  14.  
  15. Remove the turn signal cancel cam assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the upper bearing spring.

  19. Unscrew and remove the tilt lever handle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the turn signal switch lever

  23. Remove the flat head tapping screw.
  24.  
  25. Remove the round washer head screw.
  26.  
  27. Remove the signal switch arm assembly.
  28.  
  29. Remove the pan head screws.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the turn signal switch assembly from the bulk head connector.
  32.  
  33. Attach a wire to the turn signal switch assembly connector. This will help to make the installation easier.
  34.  
  35. Remove the turn signal switch assembly.
  36.  
  37. Pull the turn signal switch assembly connector through the column.
  38.  

To install:

  1. Attach a wire to the turn signal switch wiring connector.
  2.  
  3. Feed the turn signal switch assembly through the column.
  4.  
  5. Connect the turn signal switch assembly connector to the bulk head connector.
  6.  
  7. Install the turn signal switch assembly on to the upper shaft assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install the pan head screws and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Lubricate the signal switch arm assembly with synthetic grease.
  12.  
  13. Install the signal switch arm assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the flat head tapping screw and tighten to 20 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the round washer head screw and tighten to 31 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the turn signal switch lever.
  20.  
  21. Install the tilt lever handle.
  22.  
  23. Install the upper bearing spring.
  24.  
  25. Install the turn signal cam assembly.
  26.  
  27. Install the shaft lock to the upper steering shaft.
  28.  
  29. Install the bearing retainer on to the upper steering shaft.
  30.  
  31. Install tool J23653-SIR or equivalent to upper steering shaft and depress shaft lock.
  32.  
  33. Install the bearing retainer to the upper steering shaft groove.
  34.  
  35. Install the hazard knob and hazard knob mounting screw to the steering column and tighten to 20 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil.
  38.  
  39. Enable the SIR system.
  40.  


CAUTION
If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in the Chassis Electrical Section.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disable the SIR system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the knee bolster.
  8.  
  9. Remove the two nuts securing the steering column to the instrument panel.
  10.  
  11. Lower the column.
  12.  
  13. Remove the tilt lever handle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper and lower shrouds.
  16.  
  17. Remove the two wire harness straps.
  18.  
  19. Remove one wire harness strap from the steering column tilt head assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the wire harness assembly from the wire harness strap.

  23. When working on the power tilt and telescope column remove three wire harness straps:

    Remove the green, brown, natural and the black, connectors from the E&C interface module assembly.
     
    Remove the E&C interface module assembly from the lower wire shield.
     
    Open the lower wire shield to remove the wire harness assembly (note the direction and placement of wires in the shield).

  25. Remove the blue, black and gray connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.

  27. Remove the two Torx® screws and remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.

To install:


NOTE
The electrical contact must rest on the turn signal cancel cam assembly.

  1. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the two Torx® screws and tighten to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the wire harness assembly along the steering column jacket assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the blue, black and gray connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.
  8.  
  9. Insert the wire harness assembly into the wire strap holder.
  10.  
  11. Install the two wire harness straps.
  12.  
  13. Install one wire harness strap to the steering column tilt head assembly.
  14.  
  15. When working on the power tilt and telescope column install the wire harness assembly into the lower wire shield (note previous direction and placement of wires in shield):

    Slide the E&C interface module assembly into the wire shield.
     
    Install the green, brown, natural and black connectors into the control module assembly.
     
    Install the three wire straps onto the wire harness assembly.

  17. Install the wire harness strap into the steering column tilt head assembly.
  18.  
  19. Install the upper and lower shrouds.
  20.  
  21. Install the two nuts securing the steering column to the instrument panel.
  22.  
  23. Install the tilt lever .
  24.  
  25. Install the steering wheel.
  26.  
  27. Install the air bag module.
  28.  
  29. Install the knee bolster.
  30.  
  31. Install the negative battery cable.
  32.  
  33. Enable the SIR system.
  34.  


CAUTION
If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in the Chassis Electrical Section.

  1. Disable the SIR system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column trim covers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the Torx® bolts from the multi-function switch. 
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the multi-function switch electrical connections.
  10.  
  11. Remove the multi-function switch.

To install:

  1. Install the multi-function switch and the two Torx® bolts.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the Torx® bolts to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical connections.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering column trim covers.
  8.  
  9. Install steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. Enable the SIR system.
  12.
