Adjustment



The wheel bearings are not adjustable. If a wheel bearing is out of specifications, it must be replaced. Using a dial indicator, check for looseness. If play exceeds 0.005 inches (0.127mm), the bearing wear is excessive and the hub and bearing should be replaced.

Removal & Installation



Commercial Chassis
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake drum
     
    Brake shoes and cable
     
    Brake line
     
    Wheel speed sensor
     

  4.  
  5. Support the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle.

    Upper knuckle bolt
     
    Bearing retainer
     
    Nut from backside of knuckle
     

  8.  
  9. Press the hub from the knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake backing plate from the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Press the bearing from the knuckle.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Press the bearing into the knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install the backing plate and bolts. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Press the hub into the bearing.
  6.  
  7. Install the speed sensor ring and nut. Torque the nut to 145 ft. lbs. (200 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Upper knuckle bolt and nut. Torque the nut to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
     
    Ball joint to knuckle
     
    Brake line
     
    Wheel speed sensor
     
    Brake shoes and cable
     
    Brake drum
     

  10.  
  11. Bleed the brake system.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel. Torque the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Check the brake system for leaks.
  16.  

Except Commercial Chassis

NOTE
The wheel bearing and hub are serviced as an assembly. The individual components are not serviceable separately.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Wheel speed sensor, if equipped
     
    Caliper bracket from the knuckle
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Hub and bearing assembly bolts
     
    Hub and bearing assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub and bearing assembly. Torque the bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Caliper
     
    Wheel speed sensor, if equipped
     
    Wheel. Torque the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Road test the vehicle.
