  1. Remove the cylinder heads. Remove the timing gear cover, the camshaft and crankshaft sprocket, and the timing chain.
  2.
  3. Remove the valve tappets, keeping them in order to ensure installation in their original location.
  4.
  5. Remove the distributor and lift out the oil pump and distributor driveshaft.
  6.
  7. Remove the camshaft thrust plate.
  8.
  9. Install a long bolt into the front of the camshaft and remove the camshaft, being careful not to damage the cam bearings with the cam lobes.
  10.
  11. Lubricate the camshaft lobes and bearing journals. It is recommended that 1 pt. of Chrysler Crankcase Conditioner be added to the initial crankcase oil fill. Insert the camshaft into the engine block within 2 in. of its final position in the block.
  12.
  13. Have an assistant support the camshaft with a screwdriver to prevent the camshaft from contacting the freeze plug in the rear of the engine block. Remove the distributor and the oil pump/distributor drive gear. Position the screwdriver against the rear side of the cam gear and be careful not to damage the cam lobes.
  14.
  15. Replace the camshaft thrust plate. If camshaft end-play exceeds 0.010 in., install a new thrust plate. It should be 0.002-0.006 in. with the new plate.
  16.
  17. Install the oil pump and distributor driveshaft. Install the distributor.
  18.
  19. Inspect the crown of all the tappet faces with a straightedge. Replace any tappets which have dished or worn surfaces. Install the tappets.
