Six-Cylinder Engine
WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING AND/OR AIR PUMP
  1. Drain the cooling system. Remove the battery. If the engine has a fan shroud, remove and swing it back over the engine.
  2.  
  3. Remove the power steering and alternator belts.
  4.  
  5. Take off the fan, spacer, pulley, and bolts as a unit.
  6.  
  7. Move the lower by-pass hose clamp to the center of the hose. Disconnect the heater hose and the lower hose of the water pump.
  8.  
  9. Remove the water pump bolts and the pump.
  10.  
  11. Reverse the procedure for installation.
  12.  

WITH AIR CONDITIONING AND/OR AIR PUMP
  1. Remove the battery and drain the cooling system. Remove the fan shroud and swing it back over the engine.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines (if automatic transmission) and remove the lower radiator hoses. Cap the openings to prevent the entry of dirt and excessive fluid loss.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radiator.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the alternator, power steering pump, idler pulley, and air pump.
  8.  
  9. Take off the fan, spacer, pulley, and bolts as an assembly. Remove all the belts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the compressor and/or air pump bracket and secure it out of way.
  12.  
  13. Move the lower by-pass hose clamp to the center of the hose. Disconnect the heater hose.
  14.  
  15. Remove the water pump bolts and the pump.
  16.  
  17. Reverse the procedure for installation.
  18.  

V8 Engines
  1. Drain the cooling system and move the fan shroud out of the way.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines (automatic) and all radiator hoses. Cap the openings to prevent the entry of dirt or excessive fluid loss.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radiator, if necessary.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the alternator adjusting strap bolts. Remove the belts.
  8.  
  9. On engines with no air conditioning, remove the alternator bracket bolts from the water pump. Swing the alternator out of the way and tighten the pivot bolt. On engines with air conditioning, remove the idler pulley assembly and alternator with the adjusting bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the fan, spacer/fluid drive, pulley, and bolts as an assembly.
  12.  


WARNING
Do not let fluid drain into the fan-drive bearing.

  1. Disconnect the heater and all by-pass hoses.
  2.  
  3. Remove the compressor-to-front mounting bracket bolts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the water pump attaching bolts and the water pump.
  6.  
  7. Carefully lift the compressor out of the way.
  8.  

On installation:

  1. Install the by-pass hose and position the clamp in the center of the hose.
  2.  
  3. Install the pump with a new gasket and torque it to 30 ft. lbs. Be sure that the pump turns freely.
  4.  
  5. Install the heater hose and route it near the by-pass hose clamps.
  6.  
  7. On V8s with air conditioning, install the front bracket on the compressor. Tighten the bracket bolts to 50 ft. lbs. Tighten the pump bolts to 30 ft. lbs.
  8.  
  9. Replace the alternator, bracket, and idler pulley assembly. Torque to 30 ft. lbs.
  10.  
  11. Install the compressor clutch assembly (if applicable).
  12.  
  13. Install the fan assembly. Check and adjust all belts.
  14.  
  15. Install the radiator, hoses, and transmission cooling lines.
  16.  
  17. Install the fan shroud and fill the cooling system. Check the fluid level in the transmission.
