Column Shift

  1. Loosen both shift rod swivels at the ends of the two long rods from the column.
  2.  
  3. Make sure the transmission levers are in the neutral or middle positions.
  4.  
  5. Move the column shift lever into neutral to line up the locating slots in the bottom of the steering column shift housing and the bearing housing. Install a tool into the slot to hold the lever in place.
  6.  
  7. Place a screwdriver between the cross-over blade (between the two column levers) and the second-third (the upper one) lever so that both lever pins are engaged by the cross-over blade.
  8.  
  9. Tighten both swivel bolts to 125 in. lbs.
  10.  
  11. Remove the gearshift housing locating tool.
  12.  
  13. Remove the screwdriver.
  14.  
  15. Shift through all gears to check the adjustment and cross-over (through neutral) smoothness.
  16.  
  17. Check that the ignition switch will lock with the shift lever in reverse only, without applying any pressure to the shift lever.

  1. Make an alignment tool out of 1 / 16 in. thick metal. It should be 5 / 8 in. wide and 2 3 / 8 in. long.
  2.  
  3. Detach the shift rod swivels.
  4.  
  5. From under the car, insert the alignment tool through the shifter levers and the shifter to hold the levers in the neutral positions.
  6.  
  7. Place both shift levers on the transmission side cover in the neutral or middle position.
  8.  
  9. Adjust the swivels so that they can be installed freely in the shifter lever holes.
  10.  
  11. Remove the alignment tool and check the shifting action.
  12.

  1. Remove all the shift rods from the transmission shift levers.
  2.  
  3. Place all the transmission shift levers in their neutral positions.
  4.  
  5. From under the car, insert a 1 / 4 in. rod or drill bit about 2 1 / 4 in. long through the shifter levers and the shifter to hold the levers in the neutral positions.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the shift rods so that they can be installed freely in the shifter lever holes.
  8.  
  9. Remove the aligning tool and check the shifting action.
