All models are equipped with a replaceable paper element in the air cleaner housing. Chrysler recommends that the filter be replaced every 30,000 miles. It should be checked more often than this, however, as a restrictive filter element will reduce fuel mileage and increase exhaust emissions. To check the filter element, unscrew the wing nut at the top of the air cleaner and lift off the lid. The filter element lifts out. If it's completely gray or black, replace it. If it's badly contaminated with oil, replace it. Before installing the new filter element, wipe out the air cleaner housing with a clean rag.
