The engine number can contain as many as fifteen characters and digits. The first character on 225 engines designates the model year, the next three numerals are 225 (the displacement), the next one or two letters designate the model, the following four numerals the date the engine was built, and the last number the shift during which the engine was built.

On 318 and 360 engines, the first number designates model year, the next letter manufacturing plant, the next three numbers give the displacement, the next one or two designate model, the next four numbers denote the build date, and the last four the engine sequence number.

Special information identifying an undersized crankshaft, oversized tappets, low compression, oversized cylinder bores, engine build date, and the shift is stamped on the locations shown in the illustrations.
