Dodge Aspen/Volare 1976-1980 Repair Guide

Rear Axle Identification

The Aspen and Volare- models came equipped with a standard 7 1 / 4 inch rear axle was also available, which used 10 bolts to retain its cover. Axle ratios are stamped on a tag retained by one of the cover bolts. Only the 8 1 / 4 inch axle could be equipped with the Sure-Grip® traction unit. To identify a Sure-Grip® equipped axle, used the following procedure:

  1. Safely lift and securely support both rear wheels off of the ground with jackstands.
  3. Place the transmission in Neutral (manual or automatic).
  5. Rotate (turn) one wheel by hand while observing the opposite wheel.
  7. If both of the wheels are rotating in the same direction, then it is equipped with a Sure-Grip® differential.

Both axle models use SAE 80W-90 GL-5 gear lubricant for temperatures to -30°F; below -30°F, 75W lube is recommended. Sure-Grip® models also require 4 oz. of MOPAR Hypoid Gear Oil Additive Friction Modifier, part no. 4057100 or equivalent, added to the gear lube.
