KICKDOWN BAND



KM170

No adjustment is possible on KM171, 172 models.

  1. Wipe all dirt and other contamination from the kickdown servo cover and the surrounding area. The cover is located to the right of the dipstick hole.
  2.  
  3. Remove the snapring and then the cover.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the locknut.
  6.  
  7. Holding the kickdown servo piston from turning, tighten the adjusting screw to 7 ft. lbs. (84 in. lbs.) and then back it off. Repeat the tightening and backing off two times in order to ensure seating of the bank on the drum.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the adjusting screw to 3.5 ft. lbs. (42 inch lbs.) and back off 3.5 turns (counterclockwise).
  10.  
  11. While holding the adjusting screw against rotation, tighten the locknut nut to 11-15 ft. lbs.
  12.  
  13. Install a new seal ring (D-shaped) in the groove in the outside surface of the cover. Use care not to distort the seal ring.
  14.  
  15. Install the cover and then the snapring.
  16.  

SHIFT LINKAGE



KM 170, 171, 172
  1. Apply grease to all sliding parts.
  2.  
  3. Place the selector lever in Neutral position.
  4.  
  5. Depress the selector lever knob and turn it to adjust clearance between detent plate and at the end of the selector lever. Detent plate to selector lever end pin clearance should be 0.20-0.90mm.
  6.  
  7. Turn the adjusting nut to remove slack from the manual control cable.
  8.  
  9. Confirm that the selector lever operates smoothly and is set properly in every selector position. Be sure that the respective position indicator turns red.

1980-81
  1. Place the carburetor throttle lever in wide open position.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the lower cable bracket mounting bolt.
  4.  
  5. Move the lower cable bracket until there is 0.5-1.5mm between the nipple at the bracket and the center of the nipple at the other end. Fasten the lower bracket in position.
  6.  
  7. Check the cable for freedom of movement. If it is binding it may need replacement.
  8.  

1982-88
  1. Run the engine to normal operating temperature. Shut it off and make sure the throttle plate is closed (curb idle position).
  2.  
  3. Raise the small cone-shaped cover on the throttle cable to expose the nipple.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the lower cable bracket bolt.
  6.  
  7. Move the lower cable bracket until the distance between the nipple and the lower cover directly underneath it is 0.5-1.5mm.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the bracket bolt to 9-11 ft. lbs.
  10.  

NEUTRAL SWITCH

  1. Place manual control lever in the Neutral position.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the two switch attaching bolts. Switch is located on side of transmission.
  4.  
  5. Turn the switch body until the flat end of the manual lever is centered over the square end of the swwitch body flange.
  6.  
  7. While keeping the switch body flange and manual lever aligned tighten the two attaching bolts to 7-8 ft. lbs.
