REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Borg-Warner
  1. Remove the air cleaner, battery with cables (disconnect the negative cable first), starter, and the upper bolts which attach the engine to the transmission.
  2.
  3. Place the car on jackstands. Drain the transmission. Disconnect the gear shift linkage, and wire harness (if equipped). Remove the speedometer cable and disconnect the driveshaft.
  4.
  5. Remove the exhaust system from the connecting pipe rearward to the muffler.
  6.
  7. Remove the transmission oil cooler lines.
  8.
  9. Remove the control rod from its attachment to the arm.
  10.
  11. Remove the starter motor. Loosen and remove the lower bellhousing cover plate. Rotate the engine in the normal direction of rotation and remove the torque converter mounting bolts.
  12.
  13. Place a jack under the transmission and support it.
  14.

Do not support the transmission on the oil pan.

  1. Remove the transmission mounting insulator attaching bolts, ground cabls, and spacer. Remove the insulator and crossmember.
  2.
  3. Pry the torque converter back from the engine flexplate. Pull the transmission away from the engine. Lower the jack and remove the transmission.
  4.
  5. Position the transmission, with the torque converter mounted properly, on a suitable floor or transmission jack. Raise the transmission into position behind the engine.
  6.
  7. Raise the transmission and align the converter and engine flexplate mountings. Push the transmission forward until it is flush against the engine.
  8.
  9. Install the lower transmission to engine mounting bolts. Install the rear crossmember and insulator.
  10.
  11. Attach the converter to the engine flexplate. Install the driveshaft, starter motor, speedometer, shift linkage, control wire harnesses, exhaust system, and fluid cooler lines.
  12.
  13. Connect any remaining components under the vehicle. Lower the vehicle and install the upper engine to transmission mounting bolts. Fill the transmission with fluid.
  14.

TorqueFlite
  1. The transmission and converter must be removed as an assembly; otherwise, converter drive plate, pump bushing, or oil the seal may be damaged. The drive plate will not support a load; therefore, none of the weight of the transmission should be allowed to rest on the plate during removal.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the cooler lines at transmission.
  6.
  7. Remove the starter motor, lower cover, cooler line bracket and any exhaust system component that will interfere with the removal of the transmission.
  8.
  9. Loosen the oil pan and drain the transmission fluid.
  10.
  11. Rotate the engine clockwise to position the bolts attaching the torque converter to the engine drive plate, and remove them.
  12.
  13. Mark parts for reassembly then disconnect the driveshaft at rear universal joint. Carefully pull the shaft assembly out of the extension housing.
  14.
  15. Disconnect the gearshift rod and torque shaft assembly from the transmission.
  16.
  17. Disconnect the throttle rod from the lever at the left-side of transmission. Remove the linkage bell-crank from transmission if so equipped.
  18.
  19. Remove the oil filler tube and speedometer cable.
  20.
  21. Support the rear of the engine with a jack.
  22.
  23. Position a suitable floor or transmission jack under the transmission. Raise the transmission slightly with a service jack to relieve the load on the supports.
  24.
  25. Remove the bolts securing the transmission mount to the crossmember and the crossmember to the frame. Remove the crossmember.
  26.
  27. Remove all bellhousing bolts.
  28.
  29. Carefully work the transmission converter assembly rearward off of the engine block dowels and disengage the converter hub from end of crankshaft. Attach a small C-clamp to edge of bellhousing to hold converter in place during transmission removal.
  30.
  31. Lower the transmission and remove the assembly from under the vehicle.
  32.
  33. To remove converter assembly, remove C-clamp from edge of bellhousing, then carefully slide assembly out of transmission.
  34.
  35. Position the transmission, with the torque converter mounted properly, on a suitable floor or transmission jack. Raise the transmission into position behind the engine.
  36.
  37. Raise the transmission and align the converter and engine flexplate mountings. Push the transmission forward until it is flush against the engine.
  38.
  39. Install the lower transmission to engine mounting bolts. Install the rear crossmember and insulator.
  40.
  41. Attach the converter to the engine flexplate. Install the driveshaft, starter motor, speedometer, shift linkage, control wire harnesses, exhaust system, and fluid cooler lines. Tighten the flywheel bolts to 42-46 ft. lbs.; the transmission-to-engine bolts to 32-40 ft. lbs.
  42.
  43. Connect any remaining components under the vehicle. Lower the vehicle and install the upper engine to transmission mounting bolts. Install the filler tube. Fill the transmission with fluid. Adjust linkages.
  44.

JM600
  1. Drain the fluid.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the transmission dipstick and unbolt the filler tube.
  6.
  7. Raise the front and rear of the car and support it on jackstands.
  8.
  9. Remove the two topmost transmission-to-engine bolts.
  10.
  11. Remove the starter.
  12.
  13. Disconnect the oil cooler lines and cap them to avoid spillage.
  14.
  15. Remove the bell housing cover.
  16.
  17. Turn the crankshaft so that the torque converter bolts appear and remove them, turning the crankshaft for each bolt in turn.
  18.
  19. Disconnect the speedometer cable at the transmission.
  20.
  21. Disconnect the linkage and cross shaft.
  22.
  23. Disconnect the ground strap.
  24.
  25. Matchmark the flanges and remove the driveshaft.
  26.
  27. Support the transmission with a transmission jack, and the engine with a floor jack.
  28.
  29. Remove the rear engine support bracket.
  30.
  31. Remove the remaining engine-to-transmission bolts.
  32.
  33. Slowly lower the transmission while pulling it rearward to disengage it from the engine. Be careful to avoid dropping the torque converter.
  34.
  35. Position the transmission, with the torque converter mounted properly, on a suitable floor or transmission jack. Raise the transmission into position behind the engine.
  36.
  37. Raise the transmission and align the converter and engine flexplate mountings. Push the transmission forward until it is flush against the engine.
