All brakes used on these cars, beginning mid-year 1973, are self-adjusting.
1971-Mid 1973 Models
If you are experiencing low brake pedal (soft pedal), first perform the rear brake adjustment, as outlined below, before blaming the hydraulic system.
- Make sure that the hand brake lever is completely lowered.
- Jack up the rear of the car and support it on stands. Block the front wheels.
- The square-lugged adjuster is located on the rear of the backing plate. Using an adjustable wrench, turn the adjuster as far as it will go clockwise.
- Back the adjuster off slightly until, while turning the wheel, you feel no drag. Maximum brake shoe-to-drum clearance should be less than 0.3mm. Each 90 degrees turn of the adjuster decreases clearance by 0.15mm.
