DRUM BRAKES

1971-Mid 1973 Models

If you are experiencing low brake pedal (soft pedal), first perform the rear brake adjustment, as outlined below, before blaming the hydraulic system.

  1. Make sure that the hand brake lever is completely lowered.
  2.
  3. Jack up the rear of the car and support it on stands. Block the front wheels.
  4.
  5. The square-lugged adjuster is located on the rear of the backing plate. Using an adjustable wrench, turn the adjuster as far as it will go clockwise.
  6.
  7. Back the adjuster off slightly until, while turning the wheel, you feel no drag. Maximum brake shoe-to-drum clearance should be less than 0.3mm. Each 90 degrees turn of the adjuster decreases clearance by 0.15mm.
  8.
