Dodge Colt/Challenger/Conquest/Vista 1971-1989 Repair Guide

Ball Joints

  1. Jack up the front and support the car on jackstands. There must be no weight on the front wheels.
  3. Apply downward and upward pressure to the wheel avoiding any compression to the spring. If excessive play is encountered between the control arm and the steering knuckle, the ball joint probably needs replacing.

1971-80 Rear Wheel Drive

Remove the lower control arm as previously outlined. Remove the snapring retaining the ball joint to the control arm. Press out the ball joint using a ball joint remover or have your local automotive machine shop do the job for you. Press a new ball joint into the control arm. Make sure the ball joint does not cock when installing in control arm seat. Installation is in reverse order. Refer to control arm section for torque specifications.
