1971-73 Models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Loosen the adjusting knob and drop the steering wheel to its lowest position.
  2.  
  3. Remove the two retaining screws at the bottom of the instrument cluster.
  4.  
  5. Lift and pull the instrument cluster out of the two clips at the top.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the gauge wiring and the speedometer cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the instrument cluster.
  10.  
  11. Install the cluster after connecting the wiring harnesses and speedometer cable. Connect the battery cable.

1974-78 Colt Except 1978 Station Wagon

Disconnect the battery ground cable before cluster removal.

  1. Loosen screws at the upper and lower part of the instrument cluster. Loosen the screws holding the heater control knobs, ash tray, and cigarette lighter from their respective brackets, if necessary. Remove blind cover, if equipped on the right side of the glove box and remove the attaching screws on the right side of the cluster.

  3. Remove the harness cover at the bottom of the instrument panel and disconnect lighting switch and the instrument panel harness.
  4.  
  5. Pull the instrument panel cluster a little toward you, disconnect multiple connector, antenna feeder, speaker connector, heater fan connector and meter cables and then remove instrument cluster assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the cluster after connecting the wiring and component connectors. Connect the battery cable. After the instrument cluster has been installed, draw out the meter cables as long as the marking tape can be seen from the engine compartment.

1974-83 Challenger
  1. Remove the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove three screws from the bottom of the cluster assembly.
  4.  

Two of the bottom screws are located behind the brake warning and fasten seat belt lens and the third bottom screw is located at the ash tray opening. A thin tipped screwdriver or a wire hook is required to remove the lenses to gain access to the screws.

  1. Move the instrument cluster away from the dash and disconnect the meter connections, heater fan connections, speedometer cable and any other connector or ground cables.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cluster assembly from the dash.
  4.  
  5. Install the cluster after connecting the components. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

1978 and Later Station Wagon

The instrument cluster hood is removed separately to expose the instrument cluster attaching screws, attaching wires and cables, and remove the cluster from the dash. Install the cluster and hood.

1979-1982 Front Wheel Drive Colt

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the 4 cluster hood mounting screws. Leave the connectors in place.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 5 corner panel mounting screws and remove the corner panel.
  4.  
  5. Pull out the hood connector, push the connector claw to disengage the connector and remove the hood.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 4 cluster mounting screws and lift the cluster, disconnecting the speedometer cable and wiring connectors.
  8.  
  9. Install the cluster after connecting the wiring harness and speedometer cable. Install the cluster hood and corner panel. Connect the battery cable.
  10.  

1983-84 Colt
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the heater control knobs.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cluster panel attaching screws.
  6.  
  7. Remove the light switch, wiper switch, clock and indicator connectors.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cluster panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the combination meter attaching screws.
  12.  
  13. Pull the combination meter out slightly and disconnect the speedometer cable and electrical connectors. Lift out the combination meter.
  14.  
  15. Install the cluster after connecting the wiring harness and speedometer cable. Install the steering wheel and connect the battery cable.

1985-89 Colt
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the glove box.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument panel heater duct.
  6.  
  7. Remove the parcel tray.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering column lower cover.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the light switch and wiper switch connectors.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering column upper cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the instrument cluster hood screws and lift off the hood.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cluster mounting screws and pull the cluster slightly forward. Disconnect the speedometer cable and electrical connectors and lift out the cluster.
  18.  
  19. Install the cluster after connecting the wiring harness and speedometer cable. Install the steering column cover, parcel tray heater duct and glove box. Install the steering wheel and connect the battery cable.

Conquest

The following procedure applies to both the conventional needle-type gauge cluster and to the liquid crystal display type. Because the LCD gauges are composed of very delicate components, they must not be subjected to severe shocks. Furthermore, the LCD gauges must not be disassembled.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the cluster hood attaching screws.
  2.  
  3. Pull outward on both bottom side edges of the hood, and, while holding it in that position, pull it upward and off.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the wiring to the hood switches.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cluster case attaching screws.
  8.  
  9. Pull both sides of the lower part of the cluster case up and toward you.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the back of the case.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect all wiring at the back of the case and lift the case out.
  14.  
  15. Install the cluster after connecting the wiring harnesses and speedometer cable. Install the cluster hood. Connect the battery cable.
