  1. Loosen the lug nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the front end on jackstands under the frame.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering shaft-to-pinion coupling bolt.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the tie rod ends with a separator. On cars with power steering, drain the fluid and disconnect the hoses at the gear unit.
  10.  
  11. Removing the clamps securing the rack to the crossmember and remove the unit from the car.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the rubber mount for the gear box with the slit on the downside. Connect the steering gear to the crossmember. Connect the power steering lines, the tie rod ends and the steering shaft to column connector. Torque the rack-to-crossmember bolts to 22-29 ft. lbs. (1979-84); 45-60 ft. lbs. (1985-89); the coupling bolt to 11-14 ft. lbs. (1979-84): 22-25 ft. lbs. (1985-89) and the tie-rod nuts to 11-25 ft. lbs. Fill the system and road test the car.

2-WD Vista
  1. Loosen the lug nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the front end on jackstands under the frame.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering shaft-to-pinion coupling bolt.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the tie rod ends with a separator. On cars with power steering, disconnect the hoses at the gear unit.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crossmember support bracket from the crossmember on the right side of the car.
  12.  
  13. Unbolt the gearbox from the crossmember.
  14.  

The gearbox is most easily removed using a ratchet and long extension, working from the engine compartment side.

  1. Pull the gearbox out the right side of the car. Pull it slowly to avoid damage.
  2.  
  3. Install the gear to the crossmember and install the components. Torque the rack clamp bolts to 43-58 ft. lbs., the tie rod nuts to 17-25 ft. lbs., and the coupling bolt to 22-25 ft. lbs. Fill the system and road test the car.

4-WD Vista
  1. Remove the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the car on jackstands under the frame.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheels.
  6.  
  7. Using a separator, disconnect the tie rod from the knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the steering shaft joint at the gear box.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the fluid lines at the gear box.
  12.  
  13. Remove the air cleaner.
  14.  
  15. Remove the gear box attaching bolts from the rear of the No. 2 crossmember. The bolts are most easily accessed using a long extension and working from the top of the engine compartment.
