REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The automatic transaxle can be removed with the engine installed in the car, but, the transaxle and torque converter must be removed as an assembly. Otherwise the drive plate, pump bushing or oil seal could be damaged. The drive plate will not support a load; no weight should be allowed to bear on the drive plate.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the throttle and shift linkage from the transaxle.
  4.
  5. Raise and support the car. Remove the front wheels. Refer to Halfshaft Removal and Installation to remove or install the halfshafts.
  6.
  7. Take off the oil cooler hoses.
  8.
  9. Remove the left splash shield. Drain the differential and remove the cover.
  10.
  11. Extract the speedometer adaptor, cable and gear.
  12.
  13. Remove the sway bar.
  14.
  15. Take off both lower ball joint-to-steering knuckle bolts.
  16.
  17. Pry the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  18.
  19. Remove the driveshaft from the hub.
  20.
  21. Rotate both driveshafts to expose the circlip ends. Note the flat surface on the inner ends of both axle tripod shafts. Pry the circlip out.
  22.
  23. Remove both driveshafts.
  24.
  25. Matchmark the torque converter and drive plate. Remove the torque converter mounting bolts. Remove the access plug in the right splash shield to rotate the engine.
  26.
  27. Extract the lower cooler tube and the wire to the neutral safety switch.
  28.
  29. Install some means of supporting the engine.
  30.
  31. Remove the upper bellhousing bolts.
  32.
  33. Remove the engine mount bracket from the front crossmember.
  34.
  35. Support the transaxle.
  36.
  37. Remove the front mount insulator through-bolts and the bell housing mount.
  38.
  39. Extract the long through-bolt from the left hand engine mount.
  40.
  41. Raise the transaxle and pry it away from the engine.
  42.
  43. Installation is the reverse of removal. Fill the differential with DEXRON®II or it's superceding automatic transaxle fluid before lowering the car. Form a new gasket from RTV sealant when installing the differential cover. On 1978 models, be sure the auxiliary horn does not interfere with the oil cooler lines.
  44.
  45. On the A-404, tighten the flex plate-to-torque converter to; 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm), transfer-to-cylinder block; 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm), cooler tube-to-transaxle; 150 inch lbs. (1339 Nm).
