REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1.6L Engine
  1. Drain the crankcase oil and remove the oil filter.
  2.  


CAUTION
The EPA warns that prolonged contact with used engine oil may cause a number of skin disorders, including cancer! You should make every effort to minimize your exposure to used engine oil. Protective gloves should be worn when changing the oil. Wash your hands and any other exposed skin areas as soon as possible after exposure to used engine oil. Soap and water, or waterless hand cleaner should be used.

  1. While holding the cover and housing together, remove the seven mounting bolts and pull the assembly from the engine block.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Seal all the oil pump attaching bolt threads with an oil resistant sealer.
  2.

  1. Install new gaskets on the pump, housing to block and housing to cover.
  2.  
  3. Place the cover on the housing and insert two bolts to maintain alignment.
  4.  
  5. Install the housing into the block and rotate the assembly until the driving gear shaft engages the slot in the driveshaft.
  6.  
  7. Align the bolt pattern to the block, install the remaining five bolts and tighten to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the oil filter and refill the crankcase.
  10.  

1.7L Engine
  1. Remove the oil pan.
  2.  
  3. Remove the two hex head pump mounting bolts.
  4.

  1. Pull the oil pump down and out of the engine.

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten pump mounting bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).

2.2L Engine
  1. Remove the oil pan.
  2.  
  3. Remove the two pump mounting bolts.
  4.  
  5. Pull the pump down and out of the engine.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Apply a sealer such as Loctite 515® to the pump/block sealing surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the pump rotor, shaft, and drive gear.
  4.  
  5. When installing the pump, rotate the shaft back and forth slightly so the drive mechanism will engage fully and permit the pump to sit squarely against the block.

  1. Make sure the pump body is fully seated in the block before installing the mounting bolts. Tighten the pump mounting bolts to 200 inch lbs. (22 Nm).
