Dodge Omni/Horizon/Rampage 1978-1989 Repair Guide

Valve Seats

Valve seats can be refaced if they are worn or burned, but the correction angle and seat width must be maintained. If not, the cylinder head must be replaced.

Intake valve seats should be ground to a 45° angle and the valve margin should not be less than 0.02 in. (0.5mm). Check the valve stem diameter.

Exhaust valves are sodium filled and should not be ground by machine. Use lapping compound and lap by hand. Valve margin should be at least 0.02 in. (0.5mm). Check the stem diameter. The exhaust valve seat should be ground to a 45° angle.

On 1.7L engines the intake and exhaust valves are available with stems 0.02 in. (0.5mm) shorter than production valves. If the seats are cut too much during repairs, these shorter valves should be installed to allow the use of proper sized valve adjusting discs.
