REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1.6L Engine
  1. Remove the radiator cap and drain the cooling system.
  2.

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Remove the drive belts.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the water pump to block coolant hose at the pump.
  4.

  1. Remove the water pump pulley.
  2.
  3. Remove the four water pump to crankcase extension bolts and remove the water pump assembly.
  4.
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to use a new gasket.
  6.

1.7L Engine
  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2.

  1. Remove the upper radiator hose.
  2.
  3. Unbolt the compressor and/or air pump brackets from the water pump and secure them out of the way.
  4.
  5. Remove the alternator completely from the vehicle.
  6.
  7. Unbolt the water pump pulley.
  8.
  9. If equipped, remove the diverter valve hose at the valve. Remove the rear air pump bracket, then the front bracket.

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the water pump bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm), the alternator adjusting bolt to 30-50 ft. lbs. (41-68 Nm) and the pulley bolts to 85-125 inch lbs. (9-14 Nm).
  2.

2.2L Engine
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.

  1. Remove the upper radiator hose.
  2.
  3. Remove the alternator.
  4.

WARNING
Do not disconnect the air conditioner compressor lines in the next step. The compressor can be moved far enough out of the way to remove the water pump without disturbing the refrigerant filled lines.

  1. Unbolt the air conditioning compressor brackets from the water pump and secure the compressor out of the way. Support the compressor so it will not put stress on the lines.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the bypass hose, heater return hose, and lower radiator hose.
  4.
  5. Unbolt and remove the water pump assembly. Disassemble the pump as follows:

  1. Remove the three bolts fastening the drive pulley to the water pump.
  2.
  3. Remove the 9 bolts fastening the water pump body to the housing. Then, use a chisel to gently break the bond between the pump and housing.
  4.
  5. Clean the gasket surfaces on the pump body and housing. Remove the O-ring gasket and discard it. Clean the O-ring groove.
  6.
  7. Apply RTV sealer to the sealing surface of the water pump body. The bead should be 1 / 8 in. (3mm) in diameter and should encircle all bolt holes. Assemble the pump body to the housing, install the 9 bolts, and tighten them to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm). Make sure the gasket material has set (as per package instructions) before actually filling the system.
  8.

  1. Position a new O-ring in the O-ring groove. Then, put the pulley on the pump, install the 3 attaching bolts, then tighten them to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  2.
  3. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the top 3 water pump bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) and the lower bolt to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm). Make sure to refill the system with 50/50 antifreeze/water mix.
  4.
