Heater Case Assembly

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1978-80 Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  


CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Remove the center outside air floor vent housing.

  1. Remove the ash tray.

  1. Remove the two defroster duct adapter screws. The left one is reached through the ash tray opening.

  1. Remove the defrost duct adapter and push the flexible hose up out of the way.

  1. Disconnect the temperature control cable.
  2.  
  3. Disengage the blower motor wiring connector.
  4.  
  5. Part the hoses from the heater core and plug the core openings.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two nuts retaining the heater unit to the firewall.
  8.  
  9. Remove the glove compartment and door.
  10.

  1. Remove the screw attaching the heater brace bracket to the instrument panel.

  1. Remove the heater assembly support strap nut. Disconnect the strap from the plenum stud and lower the heater from the instrument panel.

  3. Disconnect the control cable and remove the unit from the car.

To install:

  1. Connect the control cable and raise the unit into position so that the core tubes and mounting studs fit through their holes in the firewall.
  2.  
  3. Install the support strap and hand-tighten the nut.
  4.  
  5. Install and tighten the two heater-to-firewall nuts.
  6.  
  7. Unplug and connect the core tubes.
  8.  
  9. Install the defroster duct adaptor.
  10.  
  11. Install the ash tray.
  12.  
  13. Install the center outside air floor vent housing.
  14.  
  15. Attach the glove compartment.
  16.  
  17. Refill the cooling system.
  18.  

1981-89 Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.

CAUTION

  1. Disconnect the blower motor wiring.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ash tray.
  4.  
  5. Depress the retaining tab and pull the temperature control cable out of the receptacle on the heater.
  6.  
  7. Remove the glove compartment and door.
  8.  
  9. Part the heater hoses at the core tubes, and cover the tube openings to prevent spillage.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two nuts holding the heater case to the firewall.
  12.  
  13. Take off the wire connector from the blower motor resistor block.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt holding the heater support brace to the instrument panel.
  16.  
  17. Remove the heater support bracket nut. Disconnect the strap from the plenum stud and lower the heater from the instrument panel.
  18.  
  19. Depress the tab on the retainer and pull the mode control door cable from the heater.
  20.  
  21. Move the heater to the right and remove it from the car.
  22.  
  23. Installation is the reverse of removal.
