The vehicle identification number (VIN) is located on a plate attached to the upper lefthand corner of the instrument panel visible through the windshield. The complete VIN is also on the Safety Certification label located on the rear facing of the driver's door. An abbreviated form of the VIN is also stamped on a pad on the engine and on the transaxle housing.

All 1978-80 VIN's contain 13 digits coded to reveal the following information:



1st digit: Car line
 
2nd digit: Series
 
3rd and 4th digit: Body type
 
5th digit: Engine displacement
 
6th digit: Model year
 
7th digit: Assembly plant
 
Last 6 digits: Sequential vehicle serial number

All 1981 and later VIN's contain 17 digits coded to reveal the following information:

2nd digit: Make
 
3rd digit: Type of Vehicle
 
4th digit: Pass Safety System
 
5th digit: Model Type
 
6th digit: Series
 
7th digit: Body Style
 
8th digit: Engine
 
9th digit: Check Digit
 
10th digit: Model Year
 
11th digit: Assembly Plant
 
12th through 17th digit: Sequence Number
