Removal & Installation

3.7L & 4.7L Engines
  1. Certain coils may require removal of the throttle body air intake tube or intake box for access.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Detach the electrical connector from the coil by pushing downward on the release lock on top of the connector and pulling the connector from the coil.
  6.
  7. Clean the area at the base of each coil with compressed air.
  8.
  9. Remove the coil mounting nut(s). Pull the coil up with a slight twisting action and remove it from the vehicle.
  10.
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal. Smear the coil O-ring with silicone grease. Tighten the mounting nut to 70 inch lbs. (8 Nm). Connect the wiring.

5.7L Engine
  1. Certain coils may require removal of the throttle body air intake tube or intake box for access.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Unlock connector by first releasing slide lock and pressing on lock release while pulling connector from coil.
  6.
  7. Remove secondary high-voltage wire with a twisting motion.
  8.
  9. Loosen coil mounting bolts; the mounting bolts are retained by the coil body.
  10.
  11. Pull the coil up with a slight twisting action.
  12.
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Smear the coil O-ring with silicone grease. Tighten the mounting nut to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm). Connect the wiring.
    NOTE
To prevent ignition crossfire, spark plug cables MUST be placed in cable tray (routing loom) into their original position.

Testing

The coil(s) can be checked with an ohmmeter.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the coil from the engine.
  4.
  5. Primary winding resistance (across the low tension terminals) should be 0.6-0.9 ohms.
  6.
  7. Secondary winding resistance (across the spark plug lead and one of the low tension terminals) should be 6-9K ohms.
  8.
  9. Replace any coil not within specification.
  10.
