Steering Knuckle

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper, rotor, shield and ABS wheel speed sensor if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front halfshaft nut (4X4 only).
  8.  
  9. Remove the tie rod end nut. Separate the tie rod from the knuckle with Remover 8677 or equivalent.
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the ball joint seal.

  10.  
  11. Remove the upper ball joint nut. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle with Remover 8677 or equivalent.
  12.  
  13. Install a hydraulic jack to support the lower control arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower ball joint nut. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle with Remover 8677 or equivalent and remove the knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the hub/bearing bolts from the knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the hub/bearing from the steering knuckle
  20.  
  21. Remove the steering knuckle.
  22.  

To install:


WARNING
The ball joint stud tapers must be CLEAN and DRY before installing the knuckle. Clean the stud tapers with mineral spirits to remove dirt and grease.

  1. Install the hub/bearing to the steering knuckle and tighten the bolts to 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.).
  2.  
  3. Install the knuckle onto the upper and lower ball joints.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper ball joint nut. Tighten the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the lower ball joint nut. Tighten the nut to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove the hydraulic jack from the lower suspension arm.
  10.  
  11. Install the tie rod end and tighten the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the front halfshaft into the hub/bearing (4X4 only).
  14.  
  15. Install the halfshaft nut and tighten to 185 ft. lbs. (251 Nm) (4X4 only).
  16.  
  17. Install the ABS wheel speed sensor if equipped and brake shield, rotor and caliper.
  18.  
  19. Install the wheel
  20.  
  21. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Perform a wheel alignment.
  24.  

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove disc brake caliper, rotor, shield and ABS speed sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove tie-rod from steering knuckle arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer link.
  10.  
  11. Remove the hub/bearing.
  12.  
  13. Support the lower suspension arm with a jack stand.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower ball joint nut and separate the ball joint from the knuckle with Remover C-4150A or equivalent.
  16.  
  17. Remove the upper ball joint nut and separate the ball joint from the knuckle with Remover MB-991113 or equivalent
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the ball joint seal.

  18.  
  19. Remove steering knuckle.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Position steering knuckle on upper and lower ball joints and install nuts. Tighten lower nut to 127 Nm (94 ft. lbs.). Tighten upper nut to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.) and install new cotter pins.
  2.  
  3. Install the hub/bearing.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower suspension arm support.
  6.  
  7. Install ABS speed sensor, brake dust shield, rotor and caliper.
  8.  
  9. Install the stabilizer link.
  10.  
  11. Install tie rod to steering knuckle arm.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove support and lower the vehicle.
  16.  

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper, rotor, shield and ABS wheel speed sensor if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front halfshaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the tie rod end nut. Separate the tie rod from the knuckle with Remover C-3894A or equivalent.
  10.  
  11. Support the lower suspension arm with a hydraulic jack and raise the jack to unload the rebound bumper.
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the ball joint seal.

  12.  
  13. Remove the upper ball joint cotter pin and nut. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle with Remover MB-991113 or equivalent.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower ball joint cotter pin and nut. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle with Remover C-4150A or equivalent and remove the knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the hub/bearing.
  18.  

To install:


NOTE
When installing hub/bearing with ABS brakes, position the speed sensor opening towards the front of the vehicle.

  1. Install the hub/bearing to the steering knuckle and tighten the bolts to 166 Nm (123 ft. lbs.).
    WARNING
    The ball joint stud tapers must be CLEAN and DRY before installing the knuckle. Clean the stud tapers with mineral spirits to remove dirt and grease.

  3. Install the knuckle onto the upper and lower ball joint.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper and lower ball joint nuts. Tighten the upper ball joint nut to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.) and the lower ball joint nut to 183 Nm (135 ft. lbs.) then install cotter pins. Grease the lower ball joint.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hydraulic jack from the lower suspension arm.
  8.  
  9. Install the tie rod end and tighten the nut to 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.).
  10.  
  11. Install the front halfshaft.
  12.  
  13. Install the ABS wheel speed sensor if equipped and brake shield, rotor and caliper.
  14.  
  15. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  18.
