Wheel Bearings

Adjustment



Durango models utilize a hub/bearing assembly which is not adjustable.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper and rotor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ABS wheel speed sensor if equipped,
  10.  
  11. Remove the halfshaft nut, (4wd only).
    NOTE
    Do not strike the knuckle with a hammer to remove the tie rod end or the ball joint. Damage to the steering knuckle will occur.

  12.  
  13. Remove the tie rod end nut and separate the tie rod from the knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper ball joint nut and separate the upper ball joint from the knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Pull down on the steering knuckle to separate the halfshaft from the hub/bearing, (4wd).
  18.  
  19. Remove the three hub/bearing mounting bolts from the steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Slide the hub/bearing out of the steering knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the brake dust shield.

To install:

  1. Install the brake dust shield.
  2.  
  3. Install the hub/bearing into the steering knuckle and tighten the bolts to 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.).
  4.  
  5. Install the brake rotor and caliper.
  6.  
  7. Install the ABS wheel speed sensor if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper ball joint nut to the steering knuckle and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the tie rod end nut to the steering knuckle and tighten to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.).
  12.  
  13. Install the halfshaft nut and tighten to 185 ft. lbs. (251 Nm) (4WD only).
  14.  
  15. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the support and lower vehicle.
  18.  

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Spindle nut
     
    Hub and bearing assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub and bearing assembly
     
    Spindle nut. Tighten the nut to 185 ft. lbs. (251 Nm).
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Front wheel

  2.  

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Hub retainer nut
     
    Hub and bearing assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub and bearing assembly. Tighten the bolts to 123 ft. lbs. (166 Nm).
     
    Hub retainer nut. Tighten the nut to 173 ft. lbs. (235 Nm).
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Front wheel
