Axle shaft C-lock
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. With vehicle in neutral, position it on a hoist.
  4.  
  5. Remove brake caliper adapter with caliper and remove rotor.
  6.  
  7. Remove differential housing cover and drain lubricant.
  8.  
  9. Rotate differential case, to access pinion mate shaft lock screw. Remove screw and pinion mate shaft from differential case.
  10.  
  11. Push axle shaft inward and remove axle shaft C-lock.
  12.  
  13. Remove axle shaft.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate bearing bore and seal lip with gear lubricant.
  2.  
  3. Insert axle shaft through seal and engage into side gear splines.
  4.  
  5. Insert C-lock in end of axle shaft then push axle shaft outward to seat C-lock in side gear.
  6.  
  7. Insert pinion shaft into differential case and through thrust washers and differential pinions.
  8.  
  9. Align hole in shaft with hole in differential case and install lock screw with Loctite® on the threads. Tighten lock screw to 25 Nm (220 inch lbs.).
  10.  
  11. Install differential cover and fill with gear lubricant.
  12.  
  13. Install brake rotor and caliper adapter with caliper.
  14.  

Bearing And Seal
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove axle seal with pry bar.
  6.  
  7. Position bearing Receiver 9338 on axle tube.
  8.  
  9. Insert bearing Remover 6310 with Foot 6310-9 through receiver and bearing.
  10.  
  11. Tighten Remove 6310 nut to pull bearing into the receiver.
  12.

  1. Remove any old sealer/burrs from axle tube.
  2.  
  3. Install axle shaft bearing with Installer 9337 and Handle. Drive bearing in until tool contacts the axle tube.
    NOTE
    Bearing is installed with the bearing part number against the installer.

  4.  
  5. Coat new axle seal lip with axle lubricant and install with Installer 9337 and Handle C-4171.
  6.  
  7. Install axle shaft.
  8.  

9.25 Inch Axle
Axle Bearings
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove axle seal with pry bar.
  6.  
  7. Position bearing Receiver 9338 on axle tube.
  8.  
  9. Insert bearing Remover 6310 with Foot 6310-9 through receiver and bearing.
  10.  
  11. Tighten Remove 6310 nut to pull bearing into the receiver.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Remove any old sealer/burrs from axle tube.
  2.  
  3. Install axle shaft bearing with Installer 9337 and Handle C-417
  4.  
  5. Drive bearing in until tool contacts the axle tube.
    NOTE
    Bearing is installed with the bearing part number against the installer.

  6.  
  7. Coat new axle seal lip with axle lubricant and install with Installer 9337 and Handle C-4171.
  8.  
  9. Install axle shaft.
  10.  

Axle Shaft Seals
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove axle shaft seal from end of the axle tube with a pry bar.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Remove any old sealer/burrs from axle tube.
  2.  
  3. Coat new seal lip with axle lubricant and install seal with Installer 9337 and Handle C-4171.
  4.  
  5. Install axle shaft.
  6.  

Axle Shafts
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. With vehicle in neutral, position it on a hoist.
  4.  
  5. Remove brake caliper adapter with caliper and remove rotor.
  6.  
  7. Remove differential housing cover and drain lubricant.
  8.  
  9. Rotate differential case, to access pinion mate shaft lock screw. Remove screw and pinion mate shaft from differential case.
  10.  
  11. Push axle shaft inward and remove axle shaft C-lock.
  12.  
  13. Remove axle shaft.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate bearing bore and seal lip with gear lubricant.
  2.  
  3. Insert axle shaft (1) through seal (2) and engage into side gear splines.
  4.  
  5. Insert C-lock in end of axle shaft then push axle shaft outward to seat C-lock in side gear.
  6.  
  7. Insert pinion shaft into differential case and through thrust washers and differential pinions.
  8.  
  9. Align hole in shaft with hole in differential case and install lock screw (4) with Loctite® on the threads. Tighten lock screw to 25 Nm (220 inch lbs.).
  10.  
  11. Install differential cover and fill with gear lubricant.
  12.  
  13. Install brake rotor and caliper adapter with caliper.
  14.  

C-Clip Type
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake drum
     
    Differential cover
     
    Differential gear shaft retainer
     
    Differential gear shaft
     
    C-clip
     
    Axle shaft
     
    Axle seal
     
    Axle bearing
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Axle bearing
     
    Axle seal
     
    Axle shaft
     
    C-clip
     
    Differential gear shaft. Use Loctite® and tighten the retainer to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     
    Differential cover. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Brake drum
     
    Rear wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the axle assembly with gear oil and check for leaks.
  4.  

Non C-Clip Type
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor, if equipped
     
    Brake drum, if equipped
     
    Axle retainer nuts
     
    Axle shaft, seal and bearing assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Split the bearing retainer with a chisel and remove the retainer ring.
  6.  
  7. Press the bearing off the axle shaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the axle seal and retaining plate.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the retaining plate and axle seal onto the axle shaft.
  2.  
  3. Pack the wheel bearing with axle grease and press the bearing on to the axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Press the retaining ring onto the axle shaft.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Axle shaft, seal and bearing assembly. Tighten the nuts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
     
    Brake caliper and rotor, if equipped
     
    Brake drum, if equipped
     
    Rear wheel
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the axle assembly with gear oil and check for leaks.
  10.
